This is not neccessarily false. For games that are not mechanically demanding (most of them) you can discern how they improve or devolve the formula. I have not played Bloodborne but I know enough about its mechanics and level design to be able to discuss it on those merits.
DMC 4 would be a slightly different method because you should at least try to do a basic frame cancel in order to know what you're talking about. Video games are a simplistic medium for the most part and understanding mechanics and technical terms is more important than playing the game itself. I bet 99 percent of /v/ couldn't explain what anti aliasing is, how tesselation affects performance or why did low poly trend come into vogue and then died off.
There's nothing wrong in watching other people play a game you wouldn't bother apart from several hours of gameplay. You should be able to discern what the devs were going for if you were not brain dead.

Borderlands 1 did a great job of showing an alien world with post-apocalyptic themes when the game wasn't even post-apoc. Borderlands 2 had more Earthly themes and atmospheres.
