So when is somebody finally going to make a roguelike with decent graphics?
>>
ill get right on it
>>
kill yourself, 14 year old.

Or get to fucking work, greedy, worthless gamer
>>
What is "decent graphics"? (Un)NetHack/Slash'EM for example has isometric version called Vulture's Eye and games like TOME4 and UnReal World have decently detailed tiles (new tiles being one of the upcoming features in next UrW version).

>>319431364
Also this.
>>
>>319431007

I don't care about the graphics.

I do care if moving, attacking or spammable spells/abilites have more than 0.5 seconds of animation
>>
>roguelike that animates events in procedural 3D environments
>>
>>319432124
Well, luckily most roguelikes don't have such a thing and you could play with thousand APM if you wanted.
>>
>>319432226

Exactly.

Shit animations like Dungeons of Dredmor and Sword of the Stars: The Pit just bog down the gameplay.

>>319431007

Anyway, OP, good luck having a studio willing to animation or even just render a character that can wield stuff like a sword, a stone, a scroll, an helmet, a cockatrice and things like that.
>>
>>319431007
>When is this book going to have decent pictures?

Roguelikes, much like traditional RPG's are all about your imagination. Graphics would contribute nothing to their gameplay.
>>
>>319432021
which one would you recommend unnethack or slash'EM
>>
>>319432997
Slash'EM is bloated.

UnNetHack is "what NetHack would be if the development was continued". However, NetHack received a new 3.6.0 version after a decade-long hiatus just yesterday and it incorporates several of these changes already and I think there's appeal in playing the legendary original.

It'll likely take a while for Vulture's Eye to be updated for the new version, though.
>>
>>319432691
>Look up unfamiliar items on google image/wiki
>End up being biased towards what they would look like on my current character despite just being a '@'
>>
>>319432997
>>319433267
Although I personally wouldn't play Vulture's Eye. I'd much rather look at ASCII graphics or tiles myself
>>
>>319433267
I've played nethack enough to ascend and grow seriously tired of the tedium that is gehennom, just looking for something a bit more fresh
though I haven't checked out the update yet

that said its interesting that technically nethack has been in development for close to 3 decades now
>>
>>319433395
I like to play with tiles, call me casual but SNES era graphics are the furthest back I go
>>
>>319432997

I would go with UnNethack but SLASH'EM is pretty fun as well.
>>
>>319433542
UnNetHack addresses that kind of issues.

I personally never liked Slash'EM, it feels like "bloated and unfair NetHack" to me.
>>
I don't want better graphics, I just want a game where each limb has hp and you can maim your opponents to death or keep fighting with one arm
>>
>>319434982
Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode, IVAN, UnReal World
>>
IVAN looks okay
>>
>>319435073
I thought UnReal world was a slavic wilderness survival simulator, is there even combat?
>>
>>319435176
IVANX is probably my favorite roguelike of all time
>>
How many Sci-fi themed roguelikes are out there? Can only think if DoomRL and prospector

>tfw no Front Mission themed Roguelike
>tfw no S.T.A.L.K.E.R. themed roguelike
Maybe once I stop getting lazy and actually try to learn.
>>
>>319435725
>tfw no Phantasy Star themed roguelike
>>
>>319435302
It's Iron Age pseudo-Finland

It's certainly not heavy on combat but there's some and the combat system is involved. Besides dangerous animals that fight back (wolverines, boars) or might even attack unprovoked (bears, wolves), there's a hostile Njerpez tribe, an occasional bandit and if you wanted to, you could attack villages.
>>
Graphics are nice and all, but it tends to get in the way of the actual game when it come to most roguelikes.
>>
>>319435725
There is also PRIME, Catalcysm: DDA, Caves of Qud I think too?

Then theres Sword of the Stars the pit but I haven't heard good things of it.

>>319431007
I just want someone to make an ARPG roguelike.

Permadeath.

Replace the flashy shallow combat with something more tactical, slow and thoughtful. Add a tactical pause button if necessary.

Replace the constant item-grind-reward-loop with extremely rare yet game changing items.

Replace the constant potion chugging with also rare potions with various effects

Replace the long game length with a short one but with many starting options and possible builds.

Replace the fantasy WoWish atmosphere with a menacing silent dark dungeon like Legend of Grimrock's. Make systems based around lightning like stealth, LoS, etc (Nethack anyone)

Add players ghosts too and make them sync online

Is there any Nethack version where you can use the mouse to select items from menu? Because having to check wich key corresponds to wich item and then having to look where that key is to press it is really stupid
>>319431007
Check out powder
>>
They did
It's called Diablo
>>
>>319436692
I've always wanted a mode like this in a souls game.
No dev has the time to do that though.
>>
>>319437117
Funny thing.
Demons was supposed to have something called true death that got cut.
>>
>>319433898

As someone who as ascended in SLASH'EM what did it felt bloated and unfair?
>>
>>319437607
Permadeath doesn't really work well when you are forced to repeat content.

A game needs to be built from the ground up for it so it will work
>>319437117
There are plently of mid budget indie top down ARPGS

If anything, I am surprised no one has tried to do this yet.

Hell, it doesn't even need to be 3D. Teleglitch was probably the closest things to this in some ways

There's that roguelike inspired thing in FM5.
>>

Now that NetHack received a new update, it alone has been around and developed for 3 decades. They're not going anywhere.

>tfw too stupid to understand Nethack

I've never made it to any character's quest or any branch after gnomish mines. I've beaten easier roguelikes such as DoD and Stone Soup but the classics like Nethack and ADoM are just too esoteric for me. I just want to git gud.

Great graphics work specficially against a RL's player-driven fast pace.
Having to pause for animation and such is bullcrap.

Check out Dungeonmans or ADOM if you're really interested.

>>319436842
Go play Brogue, it's the best shit ever.

God damnit.

That's actually a good question. I would love to play a roguelike that doesn't look like shit.

Dungeonmans is nice
>>
>>319439434

Well, how do you usually die? Newbies die either because:
-They only Elbereth when they are at 10% of health
-They avoid using consumables thinking they'll need it later
-They charged against a very dangerous monster instead of running away like hell

I mean, besides all the other bullshit "you-should've-read-the-wiki" deaths like about a gazilion ways to die due to poison and eating old corpses.
>>
>>319439117
it literally means
>game features level ups
>>
>>319438553
The roguelike thread is still more active and its ancient compared to any roguelite's.

They are not going anywhere

D&P has nice graphics and a homebrew D&D ruleset, but sadly only one character with preset class.
But you have nice infinite rng dungeon where everything can assault you.
>>
>>319441579

no because games like Zelda are labeled RPGs without having levels
>>
>>319442331
I've only see few idiots lable Zelda as an RPG. It's an action adventure game.
>>
>>319443557
>I've only see few idiots lable Zelda as an RPG

those idiots are the ones who classify it on the eshop then.

Plus, there are actual RPGs where you spend skill points but don't have a "character level"
