In enclosed construction you don't need to clean the laser at all since the only entry is trough disc slot protected by two sponges in front.
The possibility of failure is there but you can extract the disc yourself by unscrewing you PS3 and probably make all the repairs by yourself ordering parts online (unless its rebailing but then you should do it somewhere where they offer lead solder and not at sonys where they use same old lead free solder which will fail you pretty soon).
Quite honestly I doubt this two things are worth old slick design and technology.
Not to mention that newer PS3 for some reason have issues with some games like looping sound and freezes, no idea maybe its HDD they were supplied with but I remember people were complaining a year ago, maybe something changed now.

Not really an issue, old PS3 slims were pretty good in that department.
Even less of an issue for me since I put few fans inside the closet where my PS3 sits plus a stand elevating it couple cm above the ground improving air flow over and under it.
It was literally cold in summer and when you turn off PS3 and fans it doesnt get much warmer either meaning its not only case that is cold.
