Was FO4 really that bad? I enjoyed FO3, NV, and Skyrim all pretty well and got some good playtime out of them.

I've had my fun with it and the world wasn't quite as claustrophobic as I feared based on leaked info, but the story and most of the quests were a letdown.
Let me put it this way: Skyrim's main story as well as the civil war story were lackluster, but both put Fallout 4 to shame. It's anticlimactic and dull as fuck.
You get better shootan out of a proper shooter, better RPG mechanics out of a real RPG and even fucking Alpha Protocol does a better hybrid gameplay.
They have also recycled a LOT of the FO3 radio soundtrack and the old stuff downs out the few new ones, which is easily my biggest disappointment save for the runied dialogue and the perks (Lady Killer or, say, Scientist) nor SPECIAL affecting what you can say.

Not a bad plan
I would recommend it.
They have removed a lot of the rpg elements and instead focused on making a cool shooter.
F3 and new vegas are better role playing games, F4 is an open world action game.

The Perks system is a poor replacement for actual stat-building.
No reputation, morality, or even a sense of consequences for your actions, positive or negative.
Story is another "muh missing family member" plot.

As long as you can accept the horrible writing, story and dialogue for most characters. Then yeah its ok. Gameplay is fun.

That's enough to show that even the shittiest games from them will sell like hell.
It's a failure of an RPG, or would be if it was even trying to be an RPG. It's a passable shooter in mechanics that gets by because of the setting and locations, the writing is bland in almost every area except some of the companions and the story is linear, playing out almost the exact same way apart from endings.
It's hated because it's an unwarranted further simplification of Fallout, further desecration of lore, and moreso than either a heinous example of what gets by as an RPG these days.
As a shooter it plays the same, as an RPG it's shallow, as a Fallout game it's better than 3, but that isn't saying much

Yes, the game has MANY flaws, especially for a Fallout game, and some things are just pathetic. But somehow the game is extremely fun, and by far the best gameplay/open world/music of 2015. I will buy it.

The open world is nothing special, TW3's if nothing else's is far, far superior.
The ambient soundtrack is okay and the classic channel is hard to fuck up, but Diamond City Radio's selection if far too small and too much is recycled from FO3. Musicaly among all the other ways, FO4 is disappointing, small, unambitious and cheap/lazy.
