What is the best class in Final Fantasy and why is it Red Mage?

>Versatile enough to use magic and strong physical attacks
>Great to put on the front line and hack away when you just need to get through a dungeon while conserving MP
>Great to hide in the back and cast magic when you're grinding by a save point
>You can equip the barehanded ability in FFV and have ultra powerful physical attacks as well as strong magic
>Just all-around the best class in the series

Why haven't you accepted Red Mage as the best class in Final Fantasy?
>>
>jack of all trades, master of none
There hasn't been a case where you weren't better off having separate offensive and healing/support mage than a red mage or two.

Monks and Ninjas are usually strong in FF job system.
Summoner ranges from godawful to overpowered.
Mystic Swordsman is also pretty good.
>>
>>319391727
Red Mage's versatility is extremely useful. I've got a party of them in FFV right now and it's great. Everyone can do everything.
>>
>>319392585
I've finished FFV for the first time just recently. You must be in the very beginning if you think red mages are good.

For a physical attacker get a Ranger to learn its ultimate ability that hits four times and/or Ninja with dual-wield passive (which Freelancer inherits for free once you master it).
Or two-hand a sword with Sword Magic. The magic you can enchant it with depends on how advanced is your Black Mage job is. Drain or Flair enchanted swords wreck everything.

And for magic, Summoners are really strong in V, practically outclassing Black Mages altogether.
>>
>>319392969
I don't want anything OP so screw your hitting four times shit. I'm probably just gonna stick with Red Mage until everyone gets dualcast then go from there.
>>
>>319393187
It's not really overpowered, by the time you can get some master-level abilities, the game expects you to utilize them.
>>
>>319393187
>I don't want anything OP
>just dualcast
Quick + Dualcast Flare/Holy/whatever the fuck is really balanced, huh
>>
>>319391727
>Bravely Default
>Red Mages cap out EXTREMELY early, before you finish Loop 1
>Their only good features are getting BP for getting debuffed, and you have skill slots to set those in
>Job level 10 for 4/4 spells while the pure classes get level 5 spells at those levels, which is 3x more powerful
>Doesn't even get Time Mage spells, so no Comet
>>
>>319393732
Mages in general were pretty weak in that game.
>>
>>319391727
FFTA, FFTA2

Double Cast was powerful in both.
>>
>>319394119
>FFTA
>A
Irrelevant.
>>
I liked the Red Mage's style and versatile uses in FF1, when you wanted a healbot but also someone who used leftover strong weaponry...

Now he's just sort of sad.
>>
Best outfit

Shittiest class

Except in XI 'cause haste is the bomb diggity
>>
Close, but the best class in Final Fantasy is blue mage. All the versatility, and instead of reduced effectiveness you get a tedious search and an incomprehensible spell list.
>>
In pretty much every incarnation, Red Mage is great if you just want to beat the game.

If you want to minmax the game to the point where all 4 characters put enough damage out to KO every boss in 1 round, they're SHOCKINGLY not the best.
>>
>>319395058
Except in Bravely Default, since the level 5 spells are the game breaking spell for 2/3 magic classes, and Red only get level 4.
Also their martial aptitude is shit in that game, really shit.

>>319394902
Blue Mage isn't awful if its gotten early.
Gau is also cool

Black Mage > Red Mage
>>
>>319391358
I loved the class in FF1 since it could do pretty much everything and still be effective.
FF3 DS also has good a Red Mage incarnation, what with being able to equip rods and then use them to instacast, or using bow and arrow.

I love how stylish they look, by the way. Every time I'm in a game where I can customize my appearance I try and go for that look.

>>319391727
IMO Red Mage w/ Sword magic is a good balance of being good and looking good.

>>319392585
Except you're playing FF5 where anyone can do anything anyway. Red Mages are only "good" for Dualcast, and I quote "good" because there are other good skills that cost way less than 999 AP.

>>319394119
THIS.
I've wanted a Red Mage job in FFT for years.
A shame the PSP port only good a copypasta job and that Onion Knight waste of space.

>>319394902
I agree with you as far as the older games are concerned. Quistis and Kimahri are both Blue Mages and they can only use their spells as limit breaks, which is pathetic.

>>319391358
I love how they look and they were the first and only class I did a solo run with in FF1.

Sadly, they're not really the best thing ever. In the NES version of FF1 they worked really well due to how things were limited and how intelligence didn't really work. So having a Red Mage over a Black or White Mage didn't really matter too much till late game and even then they had their own benefits due to just having extra spell charges while being an offhand warrior. Unfortunately, being versatile in a genre where specialization is usually preferred doesn't really work as well. Dualcast is utterly broken as fuck and fantastic in every way in every single fucking game it's been in. Literally a god tier ability, however, you're using it to cast other shit and not limiting yourself to only Red Magic.

Literally the only thing Red mage is good for is doublecast. And even then it's better off being used as a subjob so you can doublecast in a job that has stronger magic, like Doublecasting Summoner.

Blue Mage is, in-all a superior job when it comes to variety.

At least VIII has ways to spam Limit Breaks.
Kimahri has to fill the stupid bar up and only about 3 of his tiny list of abilities are actually useful.

The bard/jack of all trades characters are always the best
>>
>>319400051

Bard is always good for free buffs and heals

Red Mage is shit. Every other mages are better at its job.
>>
>>319400352
Except the other mages can only cast from one school
>>
>>319400352

The boost conferred by bards isn't offset by the fact they're basically unable to do accounting anything while playing that it's better to just stick them in another attacker class. But I do like playing bards in mmos
>>
>>319399939
I honestly don't know. I think Anon might of mistaken it with Dia or something like that.

>>319400426
Depending on the game you can mix and match or just take the best ability out of being a Red Mage and just ignore the fact you have to use from such a limited category of spells. I still love how they look though.
>>
>>319399612
>Usually
Time Mage wasn't a thing until FFV, same with Blue Mage.
Of that list, only Toad, Quake, and Slow are commonly Black Mage abilities.

>>319399630
Hang yourself.

>>319399939
My mistake, I could have sworn Eiko in IX learned it along with the class in III. There is FF Legends III, but that isn't actually Final Fantasy.
Stone exists though.
>>
>>319400426
But they can do their schools better than RDM. This is a universal norm for RDM.

They can cast SOME magic but not all of it. they can use SOME equipment but not all of it. They get DECENT physical stats but not great.

A RDM can use -ra levels spells at best, other mages can use -ga/ja. The only thing a RDM can do that other jobs can't do is doublecast.
>>
>>319400601

Aero is white magic in 3, and Eiko are does in fact get Earth magic in the form of Fenrir, but that's a summon
>>
>>319400426

What about muh Blue Mage?

>Unique spells
>Both offensive AND defensive
>Wears heavy armors
>Usually has the most broken spells (Aqua breath, ultima, etc)

Blue mages don't get the love they deserve.
>>
Red Mages are the biggest faggots that actually think they do anything meaningful. When they're mostly a very useless class outside of maybe 1 or 2 skills.
>>
>>319400709
>Aero is white magic in 3
And various others like Tornado, though they tend to get shafted when geomancer type classes exist.

As for Eiko, that's probably how I confused it.
>>
>>319391358
Why do no other games do Red Mages right? They are always gimped to the point where you question why they even decided to include it.

most people really like BLU, but they get flack for the difficulty in getting them up to par

>needing to learn their skills from monsters
>needing to bait that monster to use the skill
>sometimes needing to do convoluted shit to learn other skills, specifically support ones that they would never cast on you on their own

They also have average to mediocre stats.

Yes, but, play the NES version, with or without bug fix patch up to you, or the PS1 version.

Both of them are similar enough without making the game a lot easier by changing the mechanics. I just prefer the music in the NES version since I'm a nostalgia fag though. I also really hate how they added MP in later revisions of it since it really breaks the game balance over the knee because of it. Spell charges make things a lot more interesting. I wish more FF games used it.
>>
>>319401235
Oh, and the fact that they have to survive that skill too, which is a problem for moves like Level X Death or Roulette. The latter especially because not only does the skill have to pick them, but they need auto-life active or else it won't be learned.
>>
>>319401442

I love the Red Mage class, to this day it's still my favorite class from the FF series.

I've always enjoyed classes that let me use both weapons and magic, so RM was perfect for me.
>>
>>319401235
The best form of "Blue Mage" was the monster skill materia in VII.
Of course, this is mostly because breaking the early game with Beta is hilarious.
>>
>>319401638
Alright Anon, just head over to Romhacking.net and pick a hack there for the NES version. It is really slow, but, you can update it to fix the bugs and make it like the PS1 version if you so desire.

>>319401643
Don't listen to this man, the PS1 version is the only good remake of the game.
>>
In FF1 it was unironically the best class, blatantly making Black and White Mages almost completely useless while being capable to pack a melee punch. Fighter/Fighter/RM/RM or Fighter/Monk/RM/RM is the best party composition.

In FFV it was another gimmicky and mostly subpar filler class with a powerful ultimate ability like Hunter or Dancer but Dualcast is very worth leveling one.

Best outfit though.
>>
>>319395058
The objectively best party in FF1 is either three Fighters and one Red Mage or a pair of each.

For speedrunning yeah, last I checked anyway. Fighter is stupidly overpowered in vanilla FF1.

>>319402602
At level 50 with Haste they would destroy everything yeah. It just took a while for them to start revving up and every hack I've played takes it longer and longer for them to get off the ground....

>>319402764
FFTA is fun in the sense of how broken it is. Dualcast being broken in it is just another fun aspect of how dumb that whole game is. I love it.
>>
>>319403028

At level 50 monks deal enough damage and hit enough times to one shot the boss several times over, no haste needed.

The only class in that game that sucked was thief
>>
>>319403537
In the original yeah for sure. They did get slightly better when things were fixed in the PS1 version but they're still easily the worst class in the game .At least Ninja makes up for it a bit, but, they're still from worthwhile.

And of course Monks are amazing, I never denied that. I just stated they can take a little bit to get them roaring into the punching monsters they are.
>>
I notice a lot of "pros" for Red mage are powerful abilities they can learn in games with job switching, such as double cast. So basically they are good to grind out then switch to something else to use their abilities with and never touch the actual job again.

Did this in FFV, FFTA, FF Dimensions, Bravely Default.

I just love Red Mages because they can do pretty much anything. Sure, they can't access the highest level spells, but they're still great at being a good support magic user that can still do some physical damage while having survivability as well. I would take a Red Mage over a White Mage any day. Plus, no other job can beat them in the fashion department.

>>319403854
