I've always hated terms like "Citizen Kane" of anything. Mediums don't follow the same set path as each other with some specific work being a singularity. Watchmen wasn't the "Citizen Kane moment of comics", it was the Watchmen moment of comics.

"Citizen Kane of x" just refers to something most highly regarded in quality, innovation and influence over its medium. That's applicable to any medium really.

Now that this is a Kubrick thread let's talk about his conspiracies

This.

Rob Ager's the only worthwhile Kubrick analyst. Everyone else just relies on the most surface level conspiracy theories due to EWS in which the Somerton orgy isn't even a literal event in the film itself anyway.
>>
Whats the "Wish You Were Here" of Video Games?
>>
>>319383018
Pretty much. People still want to act as if games are just fun times and not art. Anything a human creates is art, just not all art is considered "good".

The standards of each medium are different or course though.

You can look at moments like Kubricks use of visual effects in 2001 and link them to Carmacks use of ray-casting in Wolfenstein 3D.

You can link most moments in any medium with games.

Take something like The Great Train Robbery (1903) you could link something like that moment in film to something like Spacewar! (1962). Both weren't the first of their medium, but they move it forward.
>>
>>319383306

To a movie buff, its basically meme speak for 'best movie ever'. Which means when you apply it to another medium, you're just asking someone what the 'best game ever' is. It has little to do with influence or quality and everything to do with opinion.

you're exactly why kubrick is shit. his fan base are a bunch of stupid fucking fedora tippers. besides kubrick not understanding how to create convincing characters, he also had no grasp of the source material which he often butchered. you know what the real truth about kubrick is and why he seems so enigmatic? it's because he had autism. he legitimately was autistic. that's all there is to it.

I want James Cameron to direct one of the new Star Wars movies.
>>
>>319384717

I am a movie buff. Which is why I personally don't think Citizen Kane is the best movie ever.

I'm telling you what the average AFI following, Oscar worshipping 4 star whore thinks. The TV tells him that Citizen Kane is the best movie ever so he thinks that.
>>
>>319385430

Citizen Kane is highly regarded because of how innovative and influential it was. It's important because it came to shape how film was made, not because it was "the best movie ever".
>>
>>319385969

>Citizen Kane is highly regarded because of how innovative and influential it was.
Which is why wanna be film buffs obsess over it being the best movie ever. Holy hell dude. Why are we even arguing about this?
>>
>>319386147

Because any film buff that knows shit, knows that it's not the best movie ever. Like I said, it's regarded as an important movie because it was innovative and hugely influential. When film critics praise Citizen Kane it's not because they think it's "10/10 perfect movie that should be seen by everyone", it's because of how important it was for the art form. Someone who just wants to watch a good movie wouldn't get as much out of it as someone who is, say, studying the history and evolution of film making as a medium.
>>
citizen kane of games is either super mario 64, super mario bros or OOT
>>
>>319386928
I don't think citizen kane won any awards when it came out.
>>
>>319386636
citizen kane is an entertaining movie though, people don't give it enough credit on that department
>>
Many film buffs are correct in that assessment of Citizen Kane and right to obsess over it. Most mediums hold up innovation as a mark of quality for a reason and everything must be looked at in context.

Many people would look at Quake and say it's too simplistic and boring by today's standards. It can be picked apart by modern critics, so can Citizen Kane. But when looked at from the perspective of "if I was there" they both do extraordinary things which influenced other creators that many people did not understand until some time after.

To many Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time. They aren't wrong. And neither are you for saying The 400 Blows or Vertigo or any other movie ever made. There exists no "greatest of all time" for anything. Only peaks of innovation and quality that can only be judged with context of their times.

>>319387181
It did and was nominated for several other oscars including best picture. It was not seen as a landmark film then, only after once it's influence was seen through the work of others.

Now we're falling into opinions. I agree with that opinion. But the point is, plenty of other people do think its the best movie ever. So many that it has become synonymous with the term 'best of' something.

What is the Tetsuo: The Iron Man of video games?
>>
>>319383096
George Lucas took a series people loved and ruined it with prequels. Kojima did the same.
>>
>>319389321
Most critics and fans actually liked MGSIV and V. /v/ aint the real world son.
>>
>>319389321

But most people like MGS3 the most.

A better comparison would be Sakamoto ruining Metroid with a prequel to Fusion. Or a host of people ruining Final Fantasy.

I want this meme to end. Sure, they're a talented studio, but they're literally making shovelware after shovelware, and every once in a blue moon make a good game (MGR, W101 maybe, Bayonetta), but that's all they got to their name.

>>
>>319390926
I'd actually say the majority of games Platinum has put out are pretty good. The only shit ones I can think of are the Korra game and Max Anarchy. Their early games were pretty good with infinite space and bayo. Madworld was pretty fun at the time as well.

George Lucas? Motomu Toriyama

He's a good ideas man (behind a lot of the iconic moments in FF7) that needs someone in charge to rein him in or it'l all go south.

No, wait, I'm thinking of Peter Molyneux.

Or maybe both, I dunno.

But rockstar/ubisoft isn't a person.
>>
>>319383096
Nah George Lucas is like Bethesda. Makes beloved games/movies to begin with, then slowly become a corporate monster and fucks up their own series.

Kojima is more like James Cameron. Always ambitious, and always wanting to push the technological boundary of the medium, for better or worse.
>>
There isn't one.
As many others said, Kojima really wish it were him though,

Would be really cool if there was.
