I think Cain is pretty good because he starts with the ability to unlock doors for free. But it's too bad that the expansion ruined his schtick of being blind in one eye. Used to be that you would only shoot the acid shots with the chemical peel item.
Used to like playing as Eve because I liked the whole sacrifice your health for benefits thing, but you have so many penalties for taking damage that I don't think it's worth it anymore.
Instead I've been playing Lilith because you don't have to sacrifice anything to just double/triple your damage whenever you want.

Is Afterbirth worth getting yet? I know people bitched about it a lot when it first came out and I still haven't completed the base game yet. And any time their is a balance change on items (if those exist), does it affect everyone or just those with the DLC
Samson is the best for going through Greed.

Eve has a straight up 25% damage reduction that applies over everything else. And that's relative to isaac's base, someone like Judas actually has a 33% damage increase so Eve is even shittier in comparison.
I don't understand the point of eve. You can take her down to one heart and she transforms into the whore of babylon, but she still does shit damage and she's basically an inferior version of default judas, without his book of death.

I'd get it on sale. It's nowhere near as good of an expansion as Wrath of the Lamb was, or Rebirth (sort of). The biggest problem is that Edmund went on a massive nerf rampage and decided to make everything shit for 'muh balance' because he's appealing to the youtubers who have played literally tens of thousands of hours of isaac. But he's starting the process of unfucking it so eh.

Is there an advantage to having soul hearts over normal hearts that I'm not aware of? I remember seeing someone trade their normal hearts for soul hearts for some reason.

Losing soul hearts don't lower your chances of getting a devil/angel deal.
I had loads of fun when Afterbirth came out, but all the hype died so quickly. I don't know why, and now I can't have any fun while playing, I just feel like I either get a tedious run that isn't fun, or a fun run where I run into bullshit and die. I loved how fair the original Rebirth was, but Afterbirth brought in so much crap.

Taking red heart damage lowers the chance of a devil deal but soul heart damage doesn't, when you have no red hearts and soul hearts only the polaroid/negative effects trigger every time, boss gauntlet rooms are always open. There's a couple benefits.

There's a lot of items that give rewards for having zero red hearts, you get boss rush access, and there's a heavily increased chance of devil/angel rooms. After you git gud at isaac you tend to always trade red hearts for soul hearts as a matter of course, unless you're playing maggie or have some other specific reason to keep red hearts.

Depends on your synergy. Soul Hearts prevent you from losing devil/angel room chances by not taking red heart damage. It also makes it easier to use the Whore of Babylon item.
Since soul hearts don't require an existing container to pick up, it makes it more beneficial as health. If you only have one heart container, you can't pick up any red hearts even if it is on the floor, but for every red heart container you don't have, you can replace it with a soul heart. This makes items like Dark Bum good since it can replace the red hearts you can't pick up with soul hearts that you can.

If you damage yourself enough on the spikes, you can force the two angels to fight you and drop the key pieces, as well as a shitton of soul hearts and coins.
After killing the two of them, damaging yourself even more instantly teleports you to Dark Room.

How does Monstro's Lung interact with Epic Fetus? I had Lung + Dr. Fetus last night, that was some fun shit. Especially with an Incubus. I don't know why Eggman adds these "never take damage" characters, the best runs are those where your own attacks could kill you.
