I agree they need a fresh take. Just like MMOs they've grown stagnant. Too much focus on big worlds and the quantity of content over quality. XCX is thousands of fetch quests but lucky us it's randomized drops so getting a handful of flowers can take hours. Fallout is so concerned with density that the entire game is shooting randoms in the face.
It can be done. GTA and RDR flirt with great worlds and content. But to do it takes huge resources and top notch writers. That is beyond even Bethesda at this point and even Rockstar comes up short anymore.

Fucking hate open worlds. They lack any sort of direction and creativity. They just make one big world and fill it with subpar, unmemorable quests, then throw you in it and tell you to do whatever the fuck you want. There's no handcrafted journey or adventure, just a shitty sense that you're on one.

I don't have any hope for Bethesda shit, but Rockstar is always reliable and CDProjekt has only been improving with each game. I'm sure every other studio is working on a openworld game of some kind (its the latest fad following in the footsteps of FPS, 3d platformers, jrpg, etc) so something decent might emerge.

Eh, I like open world games sometimes, but when I do, I like them a lot. Basically you need to know what you're doing to make a decent one, which doesn't happen often because AAA is trash and open world games are too expensive NOT to be AAA.
