Alright so I looked into picking up Helldivers because I enjoyed Alien Swarm and it looked like fun. So I went to buy it, but on the steam page I was confronted with picture related and that's really put me off, so I've come here in hopes someone could elaborate for me.
What the fuck is this shit? Have they locked all these classes and weapons behind a paywall? Or is it like the shortcut kits in battlefield where you can choose to pay to unlock certain content early?

I will admit, the DLC mugged me off when i found out about it but it doesn't mean the game itself is any less fun.
It's an absolute blast with friends but the sheer amount of dlc does make it feel like you're missing out on a lot of content, especially since the dlc stuff unlocks the moment you buy it but the vanilla stuff still needs to be unlocked.

That being said, the entire pricing scheme on Helldivers for PC is fucked. The digital deluxe edition is $40 in NA, but approximately $31 in euroland and everywhere else. Also, for a game that's approximately a year old getting a "complete" release on a new platform, charging for the DLC rather than bundling it up is pretty scummy

As daunting as that DLC list is, most of the things you get are either different flavours of the same thing (Acid sprayer is a green flamethrower), or completely useless (Anti infantry rocket pod waste of space). There are still a few meaningful things in them, but those are actually upgrades, not just sidegrades
>UAV drone. Makes your on-map spotting range massive for a period of time. Once upgraded is the only thing that lets you reliably acquire research pickups (The only way to get upgrade points after you stop leveling) instead of randomly finding one or two per level
>Sickle laser rifle. Probably the best primary weapon in the game. Infinite ammo (Laser weapon, so you only use up ammo if you overheat), pinpoint accurate, ridiculous damage once upgraded. Take with the laser sight and obliterate the weakpoints of everything less then fully armoured tanks/tankbugs
>Tank destroyer. Heaviest armoured vehicle and tons of health. Can run over non-heavy enemies and don't take damage from them. Anti-tank turret with a shitton of ammo
>Barbed wire is very effective when you need to hold a point to stop enemies from flooding your position from every direction at once on harder difficulties
>Both DLC mechs are inferior to the regular version. One is complete trash because it can't hurt heavy armour at all with it, and one is outdone by the tank destroyer, or just one of the anti-tank weapons you can carry yourself, which also isn't DLC
>Lots of costumes to customize
>Precision strike ordinance to fuck up tanks/tankbugs without needing to carry anti-tank. Stop working on the hardest difficulties because of the cooldown and heavy armour being fucking everywhere

I have to thank the OP, I'm not bothering with this game now that I've found out in this thread (thanks to the diehards defending the game) that the DLC for this game has been around for months on other platforms.
There is no reason why I should be charged new game prices and new DLC prices for this old shit.
