Once Sephiroth/Jenova went out of their way at the Northern Crater to pick apart this personality and reveal what really happened, not to mention Tifa incidentally confirming this was the truth as well as Sephiroth calling him nothing more than a copy/clone, Cloud literally broke down and thought he wasn't even the real Cloud at that point before falling into the Lifestream and entering the infamous wheelchair state.
It's only after Tifa falls into the Lifestream with him again, where the Lifestream for some reason (probably Aerith) became benevolent and let her dive into Cloud's psyche, that they uncover the truth of the Nibelheim incident and Cloud's memories, restore Cloud and he realizes he is himself and has to live with his failings and not off of a fake persona.

Materia seems to exist solely to produce more souls or some shit. Like a symbiotic organism it encourages people to use it, which in turn creates more Materia and thus more mako/lifestream.
Using raw mako like Shinra does seems to fuck that process in the ass though.

This is basically a perfect 1:1 recreation of cloud. No fucking with the buster sword to make it edgy. He still looks like a weird medieval fantasy character, which contributed so much to the charm of FF7; fantasy meets technology. This remake seems to blur that line too much.
Also, cloud was a short, cocky shit who could actually back up his attitude. This is why he had such a great character arc; his breakdown, depression, and becoming a true leader and friend without the arrogance or self doubt.
