That's not a contradiction.

Just Cause 2, the game with the largest handcrafted open world of any video game ever, is only 4GB. Final Fantasy XIII, a linear corridor RPG, is 55.3GB.

The bases are hand placed in that someone used a halo forge like tool to copy paste assets in them.
The giant fields are mostly flat, and much of the environment is just skewed across them in a randomly generated pattern.

A better example of a hand crafted world would be XCX, where there are actual design decisions clearly used in each area.

I don't regret playing them, but I certainly wouldn't call any of them good.

Most seem to agree XIII-2 has the best battle system going for it, but you'll get nothing out of the story without the first game, and by that point you might as well do LR as well.
