Actually, the RPG mechanics in Souls, while completely and exclusively combat oriented, are pretty damn fucking extensive, and result in build-commitment. That is well enough to clarify for an action RPG - hell, it's far more of an RPG than games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 are.
