I always liked playing Cleric/Mage. Felt great having a spell for literally EVERY situation, and freed up party slots that would otherwise HAVE to be handed over to mages or clerics.

Yoshino, probably. I liked his banter and his backstory, and his traps were fucking killer. He MADE dragon fights possible with parties that would have otherwise been toast, in the most literal sense.

Viconia. Her personal story arc from BG1 all the way through ToB is just amazing, no matter what direction you took it in. I can't think of a more fully developed character in an RPG.
Though if we're talking about content that was added by Beamdog, Neera seems pretty fun. I've got to get around to doing her storyline one of these days. I wonder if I could duo the entirety of BG1 through ToB with her (as far as that's possible, at least), without having to resort to some cheesy Mage/Kensai build...

Having Chris Avellone write ONE fucking character didn't help matters much, either. Had he been the head writer, PoE would be another well written Obsidian masterpiece.
I also feel like they bit off more than they could chew. There were a lot of baffling decisions like tacking on characters and stuff like the stronghold. The idea of yellow NPCs and gravestones was stupid too, but understandable I suppose. I just think they could have figured out a less intrusive way to reward players for big donations, rather than put their stupid snowflake character in the game.
(Also threw me off that you run into these fuckers BEFORE finding out your Warden gift... yeah, nice job there Obsidian.)
There's also the issue of PoE being a brand new setting. BG took place in a world that was established over decades through tabletop and fictional novels.
So, in conclusion: because it was crowdfunded, because it had a mediocre writing staff, and because the world was brand new and not fleshed out as well.

Korgan was the only CE character I've ever seen done right in any game. He really did just come off as a psychopath who liked killing people. The fridge logic is that you're the son of the god of murder, so he naturally feels subordinate to you and won't betray you.

How did old Bioware take a setting as widely reviled as Forgotten Realms and make it seem so amazing?
My only exposure to that setting was BG1, 2, and IWD, so when I first went to /tg/ and saw how hated it is I couldn't understand at all.

Aerie, mechanically speaking, is the best character in BG2.
If you like pure, ditzy waifus, she's pretty good.
She toughens up in ToB and even has a cute convo with Korgan when she does.
Straight contrast with Viconia, whose cold heart comparatively thawes.
BG2 doesn't really have bad NPCs, which is nice, all of them are really hella strong, so it's all a matter of choosing favorites and playstyles.

Doing a Berserker/Cleric and Kensai/mage custome game. I'm still in BG so I am still just Berserker and Kensai but it is OP as shit. Nothing hits the berserker and he hits like a truck and has a tonne of health. The Kensai does pretty good damage but is really just being carried right now.
If I had to add a third to be completely OP what would it be? Archer/Druid For heavy sling damage and all druid/Cleric spells or a (fighter)mage/thief?

Forgotten Realms is only reviled in tabletop because it's the go-to setting for DnD. There's so much shit for it that every other setting gets overlooked -- Greyhawk (barring 1-3rd edition), Eberron (barring 3rd and a bit of 4th edition), Planescape, Ravenloft, Spelljammer, Dark Sun (all of which haven't had a proper splat book since 2nd edition)....
Yet Forgotten Realms gets a makeover pretty much every edition.

sorc is more action oriented, he has accessible spells automatically on lvl up which you choose, but has really limited number of them on each level, but can cast any of them withou memorizing
as in you can cast 6 spells of 1st lvl after rest, and you can cast 6x this spell, or 6x that spell, or any combination
mage can learn like twenty spells of each level, and offers the most variability
has to learn spells from scrolls, which are sometimes hard to come by
you have to memorize the spells, and can only cast the spells you chose to memorize

Dull gameplay, dull itemisation, dull linear writing compared to Obsidian past works (easily their strongest strength), setting was too safe, useless gameplay elements (reputation, stronghold; all implemented better in previous games) and two parter expansion.
Don't get me wrong I still think it's pretty decent but BG2 just has so much fun content to it that very few games will ever light a candle. PoE doesn't warrant more than one playthrough and I was a day 1 Spellsword which was a pretty fucking fun experience.

The wiki is lacking on information. When BG and BG 2 were popular wiki wasn't around. This sort of info is all over older forums and places like sorcerer's palace. High int and wisdom remove the detrimental outcomes from being selected as an option. Don't forget, it doesn't randomly do one of the effects. You talk to a genie and chose an option from a list.
You can select it every time in vanilla BG2 or tutu. I don't know about EE because Atari had nothing to do with BG and shouldn't be making money off of it.

AD&D isn't balanced enough for you to be able to challenge the player like this without making huge assumptions as to what their party is, and as soon as you do that it's fucking Spellcaster City because nothing anyone else can do matters except for maybe Inquisitors for their dispel and Berserkers for their immunity to status effects once your Wizard blows away defenses.

SCSII is heavily biased towards mages and fighter/mages, that's the main issue with it.
A fighter for example cannot survive at all against mindlfayer armies because of the unavoidable int drain and also the detonate sla that deals heavy as fuck damage
Improved Bodhi for example is literally unbeatable without PFMW because of her hilariously strong CON drain on attacks
