With that being said the Steam version doesn't exactly add in things that hurt the experience. So it doesn't matter which you go with.

I remember the PC port of the game being notoriously awful. I dunno if the steam version is any different in that regard.
I've got very minimal experience with the Final Fantasy series, outside sitting through my dad's playthroughs of 8 and 9 when I was younger.

You don't need tips for FF7. It's the second easiest game in the series. As long as you have Restore material, you're ready to take on the world. There's only like 3 optional bosses that might be a challenge.

Pretty much the same except it has extra 'cheats' like x3 speed or no random encounters.
get the ps4 version it has built in cheats for stuff like no encounters, speed up etc. great for getting past the boring stuff if youve played the game a million times before.

Its PS1. PS1 emulation has been advancing for years and is effecient enough that you can run most PS1 games on default plugin settings with a decent PC with PCSX.
All PS1 games should be emulated unless you want to make sure you can keep them forever via steam.
PS. If you value cheevos and Cheevos are on steam, get that version.

The trophies do seem easier than the steam achievements overall though.
There's an achievement to master all materia, which isn't a trophy I don't think. It's not hard, it's just ridiculously time consuming (and missable)

I've never played the game, I love old 8/16bit games and enjoyed the SNES Final Fantasies but I'm hesitant to play VII because I really can't stand shitty early 3D. Should I bother or just bide my time until the remake finally comes

The steam version isn't terrible but it has no advantages over the original, but much worse visuals. It runs on shitty early Direct 3D, which means all the soft shadows and special effects from the original version are gone.

I remember FF7 being a bit tricky to emulate properly years ago. Sometimes the whole environment would have green/red outlines everywhere, and the encounter effect wasn't correct.
