Not really. Japanese is hard. If you actually want to learn it by which I mean 2k+ kanji minimum then you'll be at it for a while.

Vocabulary is the problem, you can learn all the useful kanji in 1-2 years if you study decently.

Learning it for vidya alone is stupid.
Still, it can be useful if you want to live there or become a translator or some shit.

Chances are you'll discover more interesting things while learning it.

However, getting truly fluent will probably take longer in terms of hours than the amount of hours you'll play japanese games because of it.

>inb4 deleted

>>
>>319309513
Compared to Japanese I'd say English is a bit harder because of all the bullshit rules and the fact that the spoken form of words is so out of touch with their written form, not to mention all the exceptions in grammar.

Japanese on the other hand is very straightforward and simple, just a lot of memorizing.
>>
>>319310720
Goddamn it
>>
>>319310937
Japanese grammar is good because everything assumes the listener/reader already knows the context of what is being talked about. It's basically cave man-level grammar.
>>
>you will never learn a million kanji so you can play Super Robot Wars
>>
>>319310050
memorizing the said exceptions is easy as fuck. Japanese on the other hand, you have to memorize all 2k kanji and all that shit.
>>
>>319310874
Is DDO really worse than that shitty photographer pantsu game?
>>
>>319311539
>you have to memorize all 2k kanji and all that shit.
Yeah but it's not hard, especially when you realize there are only like 200 different radicals which make up all the kanji. Sometimes you can even guess what word the kanji is just by the radicals
>>
>>319311572
Well, I got my warrior to lv45 and my reaction is more "frowning" because how tedious and repetitive the whole ride was.

Don't compare them. The pantsu game at least do his jobs as Visual Novel, despite the shitty sandbox side. DDO has great combat but the main quests/sub quest are shit, even co-op (then they are easy, fast and chaotic as fuck).
>>
>>319311539
People bitch about "much exceptions" in English, thing is 90% of them do not matter. Beyond an academic standpoint, the "exceptions" do not affect everyday writing and speaking.
Nihongo is fucking difficult for English speakers because it's such a vastly different writing system and is relatively loose in structure. Plus learing Hira, Kata, and enough Kanji to read common text is daunting enough to make most give up or never even try.
>>
>>319312101
You make an educated guess once you know enough kanji and their radicals but that takes awhile. Plus with the more pictographic ones, its difficult because a lot of them are cultural context.
>>
>>319312141
>Nihongo is fucking difficult for English speakers
Learning any language is difficult for English speakers because most of them only know English whereas in some European countries children will learn 3 languages in school and one or two more optionally. When you have learned to learn any language will be easy to git gud at
>>
>>319311539
If you can remember the names of 721 Pokemon you can learn Kanji.

>>319312141
Maybe it's because I'm ESL and my native language is pretty structurally different from English but making the leap from English to Japanese is just the same as making the leap from English to any other west germanic language.

Hiragana and Katakana can be learned in a week (not even exaggerating) and although daunting at first the difficulty of learning Kanji is seriously overexaggerated. They are just emojis.
>>
>>319312469
>once you know enough kanji and their radicals but that takes awhile.
Well it really depends on what you think is "awhile". For me it took around 150 hours to learn 2k kanji and their readings. You can do that in a few months if you study really intensively or in a year if you take it easy
>>
>>319312551
Eh, that doesn't really affect much. Most schools teach a second language as a requirement, even if at a basic level. As a primary English speaker, learning any language that has Latin as a root is far easier than one that doesn't.
>>
>>319312873
I'm taking it as a Uni class. Memorizing the Kanji to read isn't bad. I'm learning it from the ground up, from a native speaker. She went through literally the fundamental basics from a grade school level. I'm learning for more than just to be able to read it as I intend to teach abroad in Japan and Korea
>>
Basic Japanese is easy shit. You'll get the kanas down in 1-2 weeks TOPS and if you keep exercising each day to get a firm grasp, you'll be set to start with kanjis.

Study kanjis by grade level/JLPT level, whenever you encounter a kanji you don't recognize in a game, OCR it, write it down a bunch of times, really memorize that shit.

Biggest hurdle is grammar though, to really get that right you have to be aware of dozens and dozens of rules.
>>
>>319312968
>Eh, that doesn't really affect much.
It really does. It's kind of like getting good at an FPS game then playing another FPS game, you'll be much better than others who play the same game but have never played an FPS before.
>>319313230
>I'm taking it as a Uni class.
Yeah getting a teacher is always the best choice. Self studying is much more efficient but having a teacher is overall much better

I started learning Japanese in middle school through a program with one of the local colleges. They only had 3 levels. Children, Beginner, and Advanced. I went into the beginner one because the Children were all very little kids bu the Beginner one was all adults which was a bit weird since I was just 11.

Anyway, I ended up having my sensei from that program become a private tutor for me as she worked at the same college as my mother and would tutor me after school. I worked with her from like age 12-16. Last few years of HS I found a different private tutor because my first sensei moved back to Japan.

In college I tested into the 300 level course, which was only one other guy there who spent a year in a study abroad program. His grammar and speaking was awful but he had a really great grasp of Kanji, which I have always struggled at memorizing.

Anyway, I took 300-400 Japanese in college and came out with a minor in "Asian Studies" and a JLPT2 cert.

I honestly can't say it's affected my life much. It's helpful for some things and I still haven't been to Japan because poor PhD student, but I'd still like to. I'm not big into VNs so most games that would need translating aren't my style anyway. Also I read comics more than manga so, maybe it was a waste of time, but Im glad I did it all.
>>
>>319304469

I did. Japan makes so many video games, meaning it's worth it if you happen to like Japanese games. It's like non-English speakers have to learn the language in order to enjoy most vidya. Think of all the perks

Japanese is perfectly learnable without university courses or tutoring. In fact you're probably going to learn a lot faster yourself than by taking some shitty lectures once a week. Retard proof guide:

1. Brute force memorize hiragana and katakana or learn them through mnemonics. Google "realkana" and "kana mnemonics". Takes less than two weeks.
2. Start drilling kanji as early as possible. Heisig's RTK1 is good if you have trouble distinguishing them from each other as the book goes through them in the order of similarity, not how often they're used. I personally found learning the actual readings and meaning through vocab easy after getting down their shapes. Others prefer to learn new kanji along with new vocab. Google Anki, it's a free flashcard program you can use to drill kanji and vocabulary. Download RTK1 or other kanji decks. RTK1 itself is not free, but it's easy to find pirateable .pdf files of it.
3. Download Core 2000, 4000 etc. Anki decks for vocabulary.
4. Google Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. It's free and teaches you most grammar rules you need to know in a logical manner rather than attempting to make you memorize easy tourist phrases and such like most workbooks usually do. You may want to take actual notes or go through it a few times.
You can switch between phases 2, 3 and 4.
5. Download ITH and AGTH for text hookers, Translator Aggregator, plus its JParser add-on. DO NOT use the machine translators, just JParser which tells you the readings and meanings of kanji, and even then take its results with a grain of salt (it obviously can't parse names and some other rare shit for example) and remember not to keep it as a crutch. Make Anki cards and attempt to properly memorize new words you come across. Start playing easy to understand games / VNs / eroge.
6. Congratulations, you are fluent enough to understand most Japanese media.
>>
>>319320954
Thanks for the tips, much apreciated.

Along with VNs i also recommend reading whatever manga you want as long as it has furigana. Furigana only for the fact that you can easily look up words without going to a lot of trouble. Personally i find manga a bit nmore enjoyable when starting out, just because VNs usually take a while to get into and if you are looking up words, researching grammar you dont understand, putting it all into anki etc, reading something will take you at least 5x as long than just reading english.

It's all down to preference though so just try it all out and see what works best for you.

>>
>>319304469

>>
>>319323464
Have you tried taking notes? I learned better by jotting all the things down and maybe some examples along the way, then reading through my own notes. Helps you keep focused on one new grammar rule at a time instead of accidentally ending up leisurely reading through the whole thing without actually taking time to understand the things it teaches.
>>
>>319304469
For video games? No.
For video games, manga, anime, other media, a means to communicate and an interest in Japanese or language as a whole? Yes.

Don't learn a language for one trivial thing. Make sure you have several reasons to motivate you. As for me, I enjoy all these media and also like language. I love finding similarities and differences between them as well as learning how to write the Kanji. Learning Kanji and Japanese as a side project alongside of what I'm learning in college is pretty fun.
