Also, I grew up playing the Italian version. Last year I replayed it in english and I found out that the former is far more detailed and from what I understand closer to the original japanese, epecially at the end where Ultimecia (which is translitterated as Artemisia in italian) talks without putting 'K' everywhere and rambles about algorithms and stuff.

The fact it was somewhat colorful at times before was palette limitations, or you could just cite the prior argument, and say this better fits the intent of the story than the poor choice of bright colors when PS1 can do gloomy very nicely (SOTN, lots of other stuff.) I mean, Midgar is supposed to suck shit. Blade Runner is a good place to go. The lower reaches should also probably quite resemble Fritz Lang's Metropolis, or the shitty, 3rd World Tier under area in GITS. (Metropolis FEELS appropriate though. Shinra and other big wigs live at the top, where it's nice. People like you live down with the motor oil and grease and rust. And fucking tunnel scorpions/gribbly sewer monsters.)

Basically, they couldn't decide what to do with them. Vincent's whole character got completely rewritten several times (from horror researcher to chemist to detective, and finally to a former member of the Turks) and by the time Square made up their minds it was too late to make them into proper party members and characters. They almost got cut, but Square finally managed to squeeze them in as borderline cameos.
