I've played TW1 like 1.5 times (first time I had to stop in the middle due to problems with the craptop I played games on at the time) and TW2 twice. TW3's probably not getting replayed anytime soon because even though I actually think it's the best game in the series, it's also obscenely fucking long. It's definitely more engaging than chapter 1, but it's also a massive clusterfuck of main quests and it's hard to really figure out where any of it is going or how they will tie together, which can make it feel like a whole lot of busywork with no immediate end in sight. Also the swamp is the fucking worst thing in the game and there's way too much running back and forth throughout the chapter.
On playing it again though, I did appreciate how all those quests that contribute to the investigation come together. It's subtle but there are a huge number of different ways for that storyline to play out and it's actually pretty impressive. For example depending on when you figure out thatRaymond is a fakeand which quests you've completed by then, there are a ton of slightly different scenarios. It's extremely reactive and gave me that sort of Deus Ex "I can't believe the game actually accounted for the specific things that I did" feeling. I have to give it credit for that, even if I still feel like the pace gets really bogged down by the number of fucking errands you need to complete to progress the story.
Thankfully after that chapter 3 is fantastic and 4 is GOAT so it's pretty worth it.

I liked them a lot. Don't know why autists demand people read the books first. Geralt is basically a completely different character in 1 and 2 and almost every single character is some new original creation. Even Triss is pretty fucking different from the books and it seems like she was supposed to be Yennifer, but changed at one point. The games are like fanfictions and reading the books did nothing for me.
I also read the books, and I personally recommend it. You will understand better the characters and their relationships, the territorial intrigues or the fact Ciri is the very most important character on storylinge if you read first the books. Between the second and the third it's the perfect moment, because Geralt doesn't remember his past until The Witcher 3.

Short explanation is that 2 combat is awful with the rolling and backstabs and getting locked into strikes, and the menus are awful consoletrash.
1 has absolutely godlike menus, and the combat is at least nice to look at while not very engaging.
3 has better menus than 2 and the most functional combat in the series. The sidestep dodge is great.

1 has Azar Javed and The Professor with a damn super mutant plot for a big part of the game, absolute trash that ruins otherwise an engaging and well crafted story. However even that borrows heavily from the books.
3 biggest problem is the last chapter. The Wild Hunt is honestly pretty bad as an antagonist. The sideplots are excellent however.
2 is mostly about Geralt getting stuck in politics, has nice twists, decisions that literally alter the game so that you have to play it twice to grasp the whole thing. Letho is an amazing antagonist, really steals the show. Damn shame that he was so criminally underused in 3.

1's menus and gameplay bored me. Timed click gameplay wasn't engaging, but the alchemy system was great. Signs were the worst in the series. Skill system and skill-based sword damage was also very interesting.
2's menus felt more functional and the weight system was more forgiving than the limited inventory space. Enjoyed the less time based combat, signs were fun to use, the difficulty curve was fucking retarded though, and Geralt was really floaty.
3's combat was a blast, menus were improved, Geralt felt much less floaty, lock-on was made usable, block was made usable, difficulty curve was improved, and signs were amazing. Potion system is my least favorite, but love decoctions to death.

If you start out on your first play through, you're most likely going to Quen and light attack spam because the difficulty curve makes learning in the prologue retardedly hard. But TW2 actually had excellent signs. Yrden was great against groups, Aard was absolutely fantastic because of all them cliffs and stun ability. Igni was insanely good as it has been in every game. Quen was also very good, especially with the chain lightning ability. And Axii was god-tier for group management too. Too many people underestimate the ability that lets you divide group attention and increase the damage you do without risking yourself.
