L4D1 has a small but dedicated community
L4D2 died a couple of weeks ago when an update broke it but it was recently fixed so you'll find games. The community is utter rubbish though and they are not noob friendly. Think git gud chatspam but instead of getting pwnt they just votekick you for sucking.
it has one of the best online communities IMO. yes you will get kicked if you suck but in general the people are fun, interesting,and cool compared to the nerds you find on CS GO.
I always found the community to be complete shit, but you can find games easily enough.

Playing VS is bad. Way too many elitist fucks who rage quit if they lose, vote kick you if you're not as good as them, or stack team in order to win. It's terrible and I've blocked so many players because of it so avoid it unless you have friends to play with.
Campaign Expert
Griefers are rare but do exist. They just join the game and shoot and kill everyone ruining everyone's fun for a bit. A minor annoyance.
You may get kicked if you're exceptoinally bad such as being selfish, not sharing, double dipping on kits, using items inappropriately, or using pills when someone else could use them, being completely oblivious to surroundings thereby letting teammates die. Just play on a lower difficulty til you get good.

I've played 500 hours so really not much left for me, Expert games are either: griefed on join, with scrubs who think they're playing Advanced, and a group of really good players..probably with weird anime avatars
versus is like others will tell you, a mixed bag - more like mixed fag, hearing a nasally adult man yell at me for spitting something that wasn't his charge is just sad
One time I griefed a kid who turned out to be like a 12 year old girl, I kept shooting her and she'd say "stoooop" in a surprisingly calm voice, it was cute.

I used to play a shitload and was pretty good desu. Came back just a couple of days ago after 2 years away.
There are much fewer games and more trolls than i remember, everyone just joins the expert games, guns you down then quit.
Also full of people who join expert, then leg it out of the saferoom, get incapped, start screaming that its bugged and heal themselves when not black and white. Then everyone quits if they fail even once, which makes a campaign play impossible.
Bit of a shame.

It's one of the nice things about the L4D games, the main drive of the game is just to survive, while the "story" is being told only second-hand through locations/graffiti/corpses etc. and isn't mandatory.
I hope they'll make an L4D3 one day and keep continuing it like that. Maybe railroad the survivors through a CEDA facility or something that has a bunch of information on the infection inside, not to have the survivors try and find out what the virus was or anything but just trying to get through it/maybe find supplies inside.
We as the players could learn more about the story if we take the time to look around the facility while the characters themselves can continue being oblivious to whats going on and only thing about survival.
