After playing through the series, I have come to the conclusion that Jak 2 is the best one.

Jak 2 is arguably the best video game sequel ever made, so I agree
Only problem Jak 2 had was sudden difficulty spikes, and the terrible grind recognition on the hoverboard making one mission grueling because of multiple drops to your death.

That, and I also can see why some people didn't like the "dark and gritty" angle, but that's a personal preference, and not something that can really be measured.
