My friend Stephen is a dick-rider when it comes to the fallout games after fallout 2 (dude never even played 1 & 2)

So I would like my fellow anons to tell me the flaws you have found in fallout 4, or minor complaints that ruin the experience for you or make you think that Fallout 4 isn't as good as Fo3 or New Vegas.
>>
dialog when is number 1. game feels like you have no choice anymore. everything you say will still lead to one direction which sucks. thats probably my biggest complaint.
>>
>>319237789

>>
>>319237789
Like the dialog doesn't feel like it holds much weight?

>>319237561

>dialog choice sometimes generates an answer that i couldn't possibly see coming
>on the helicopter ride to the Prydwen, one of those random BoS helicopters smashed into the Prydwen as i was on approach, kinda ruined the moment
>so few quests? in previous FO games (and Skyrim) i had a quest log the size of your mother's client list

besides that there are the standard Bethesda shenanigans, also radiant AI shenanigans

i still like it though, even after /v/ fucking spoiled the game for me
>>
>>319238259
>one of those random BoS helicopters smashed into the Prydwen
That's golden.
>>
Dialog is now entirely focused on telling a story. It's like an interactive movie now whereas before it was a crucial game mechanic. Your words have very little impact on the world. Power armor is changed in a fun way but in a way that feels completely inconsistent with the "here's your reward for being so pathetic and weak" in especially the first two games. Most of the non-main quests in this game are mmo-like and are repeatable which makes them less fun than in any any other of the games. There's little point in playing it a second time because builds don't matter anymore and the game is so linear that there's not much "changing it up and playing from a new perspective and with a new goal" to go around. It's still fun though.

Oh wow that's fucking horrible
>>
>>319238607
So why don't the builds matter anymore to you anon?
>>
>>319238509

yeah i was just about to dock, thinking this was pretty cool and everything

So i'm sitting there watching this pretty big helicopter coming towards my helicopter and i'm all like "cool another one coming in to land"

Then I noticed it was on ramming course with one of those propellers and just sat in disbelief as it crashed into it, dissapeared off screen and then heard this huge explosion.

Yeah kinda jarring and it ruined the whole setting for me
>>
Fallout 4 feels like a beta version of a fallout game, it feels empty and nothing matters. No matter what you do, it wont have any effect. Fallout 3 is more of an RPG and that says alot.
>>
>>319239008
Because you only need perks, no skill points. You are instantly a master of fucking laser rifles and shotguns alike. Leveling up doesn't matter, doing quests doesn't matter, talking to NPCs doesn't matter.

You just dick around with a power armor doing the exact same thing over and over again.
>>
>>319239459
Well if you're the same anon, thanks for responding.

But what do you mean by "doing the exact same thing over and over again."?

Hopefully my Charisma is high enough to keep asking you these things :)
>>
>>319239810

not him but as i said earlier, where the fuck are all the quests? in previous bethesda games you stumbled all over them, here though...

I'm lvl 31 and as of right now i have 7 quests in my log, 3 of which are radiant quests which don't interest me one bit
>>
>>319240103
That sucks, is there anything end-game that interests you?
>>
>>319237561
Commits the biggest sin of a Bethesda game for me.
It doesn't feel replayable. Like, at all.
I mean, I could maybe play as a stealth character one playthrough, then a melee character another, but thats it. All the quests have the same route and feel the same (thanks to the shit dialogue), and while there are 4 endings, googling them shows that they are pretty damn similar to one another. I just have no need to go back to playing the game after beating it. At least, not until some good mods come out.
>>
>>319240456

I haven't finished the story yet so i dunno m8
>>
>>319239810
>"doing the exact same thing over and over again"

Quest
Talk to a person
Go to the dunge-I mean building
Clear it of (raiders/ghouls/mutants/synths)
Get the Mcguffin
Give it to the person
120 caps and a fist full of XP

I know the radiant quests are supposed to be like this, but even the named quests mostly follow the same formula. Get a generic thing from a building fulla baddies and bring it to questgiver, then he never mentions it again.
>>
>>319239810
No, new mad anon bringing the bants.

Bethesda decided that "random generated quests" with the random being as static as possible would be a good idea. This means that there are shit tons of quest, but they all do the exact same thing. The main house nigger says "Lo and behold, vault fucker! Bandits are wanking around at X location!". So you go there, kill the bandits and report back. Then you get a new quest and the main house nigger says "Lo and behold, vault fucker! Bandits are wanking around at Y location!".
And this goes on endlessly because the amount of actual quests in the game is bare fucking minimum.
The SPECIAL makes no fucking difference as well now. Got 5 Charisma but need 6 for a perk? No fucking problem, just level up and put the point in Charisma and you are good to go!

It's not an RPG.
>>
>>319240624
Oh alright
>>
I find the Idiot Savant perk to be insanely OP

Just now I turned in a main quest and I received 2300xp, went from lvl 30 to 31

ayy lmao, and i have like 7 INT and the perk still triggers so many times
>>
>>319240832
Quite an interesting interpretation.

I like it.
>>
>Can't afford it/10
>>
Well thank you anons for your input.
The information I have gathered is invaluable for I have to shove into my fallout dick riding friend's face of his.
>>
why do people keep comparing new vegas and 4?
Fallout 3 was shit
Fallout 4 is shit
Bethesda is shit
>>
>>319241410
You're technically right about that one anon, but I am trying to show a friend of mine that this game is not worth it.
>>
>>319241471
Why he is even your friend is beyond me...

Ditch the degenerate and find peeps what can wipe their own arses.
>>
>>319241471

After I finish the story, i will still have played for over 50 hours. Which is good in these cowadoody days. But somehow I feel it has no replayability, compared with other fallout games.

I played FNV 3 times and I still encountered new shit, in this one i get the feeling it won't be so
>>
>>319241591
Correction, didn't mean "Not worth it"

But I meant that it's not as good as others.
>>
>>319241636
More of an School Chap but I digress.

I use friend as a shortened word for Acquaintance at my school
>>
the decision to merge perks and skills was a terrible idea, really. skills were just what your character was good at, but perks used to be neat bonuses that would often come packaged with a small drawback so that it wasn't entirely positive. in fallout 4 the only thing that informs your decision on what perk to get is what you feel like you need the most right then. it makes leveling up boring and kind of a chore.
>>
It's literally the GOTY
>>
>>319241665
Bethesda actually managed to make Skyrim seem great in comparison.
At least the quests there wasn't only "Halp, b-bandits!".

Well that settles it, I am getting a refund and buying Morrowind on GOG instead, might as well replay it. I fucking hate these non-descript sandbox games that most high profile games seem to strive to be nowadays. Talk about appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Man, I've been replaying Fallout 2 this weekend and that game got quest design so damn right. Found myself playing NV and fallout 2 after about 150 hours of Fallout 4.

Still enjoy those two games more, even in my 5th playthrough of Fallout 2 I keep finding new stuff, like getting the Highwayman stolen in New Reno, making a deal with T-ray by sleeping with him and then having my car upgraded.

This was a downward slope right since Skyrim got released, already 4 years ago you could see their change from actually caring about RPG mechanics and making it about "SEE THAT MOUNTAIN? YOU CAN CLIMB IT!"

As someone who picked up F4 as their first Fallout game, I hate it. I cannot get into it.
The game throws so much in my face when I first start that I get lost just trying to reach the menu. The game makes no attempt to warn me when my health is low, so I'll abruptly just collapse when fighting more than one raider
I found the armor suit, but I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to play with it on. I stored it in a garage where I built a shelter, red rocket gas station or whatever it's called. I don't know its full purpose and haven't gone back since.
I just think the game is too liberal with letting you do whatever you want. I don't know where to go or what to do, so I just follow the tracker on my map - and so far it's been "people need help, go to this spot and kill Raiders. then go to this spot and kill a few more." The guns aren't very fun to use, and ammo is difficult to find so I usually A. use melee weapons or B. use a shitty gun I don't like because I have an abundance of its ammo
I don't "get" the game - my friends who all picked it up said I wouldn't miss a thing if I went straight into 4, and seeing how it made $140 million on launch day I figured "what the fuck, it must be super fun right?" and I end up picking up the game for about an hour every week, kill roaches, kill raiders, get bored and play something else.
I'm not fond of strict linearity, but the game COULD have done a better job at incentivizing you to go through the storyline a LITTLE more than the tracker on your map. I get that part of Fallout is to explore the wasteland and build shelters or whatever the fuck, but it's so BORING. Everything looks the fucking same, all the enemies are either humanoids or giant cockroaches and rats (and yes I did fight the giant thing outside the museum, but he was a pushover since I had the suit + machine gun), I have no incentive right now to dick around in the wasteland and find more random shit I don't need. It's frustrating that I can't get into Fallout 4.
>>
>>319237998

Yes
No, but yes

or

You can walk away from the person you're talking to.

>>
>>319244058

>>
>>319244712
That's what happens when you have a game with so much dialog then you give a guy to voice it all, the dialog writers have to fuck with the outcomes and such to make it easier for the VAs
>>
>>319245185
But anon that's an extra script that could bloat the game and make work worse than it already does and im talking that i had quests that i couldn't finish because the AI had something blocking their path and ended in limbo until i found the way to clear their path up for them
>>
>>319244712

It's really only two options:

1. Yes
Can be said earnestly, sarcastically, or angrily.

2. Maybe
Say you'll think about it, or walk away from the conversation.

But you need to say yes to make any progress in the game, so there's really only one option.

They are not little and the pros don't outweight the cons, the game looks better and the gunplay it's better but at what price?

While the game looks and plays better, the writing nnd plot actually got worse. Almost none of the wasteland has any unique or interesting locations. Every map feels the same with a few tiny changes here and there.

Fallout 3 had better atmosphere, New Vegas was miles ahead in terms of writing.

Its OK, overall though its a step backward for Bethesda as a maker of RPGs.
>>

Drop it and play New Vegas, then wait a year until enough mods come out to completely rewrite the game to make it half of what NV was.

I consider it subpar and a waste of a shit ton of opportunities, to a point that is sad that Bethesda was so negligent on the making of this game, because now the game is more of an FPS with some "RPG" elements throw in there and nothing more, it kinda reminds me of infinite at some point and situation of having good gunplay and overall good aesthetics but the rest being shit because they threw away what made the other games good for trying to make it more accecible for the dudebro people.

meh, it's okay i guess.

normally i find i can enjoy replaying the newer fallout games with more mods and different playstyles, but 4 shoehorns so much of the RPG shit that it's mostly just an off-rails shooter now.

I've lost interest in it after doing the story and playing around with one or two settlements. While the gunplay is kind of neat, it's not so good as to warrant all the shit that got cut.
>>
You can't affect the game world. Just take one look at the copy-pasted ending.

There are several junctures where you can decide who lives and who dies, but really that's it. There's no branching, non-linear narrative. Only the narrative you make up in your head, as you're looting the 37th garbage riddled building filled with respawning enemies to finish your umpteenth MMO quest, to collect aluminum cans so you can make defenses for your settlements that need you to personally defend them anyway.

Fallout 4 is to the Fallout franchise as Infinite is to the Shock series.

Its geared towards 12 yr olds or people that just havent played many games except whatever is the most recent and most popular. Will you have fun? I doubt youd spite the game and hate it, but its definitely not worth the pricetag and its not worth the hype at all.

It really is just another generic game that, if it were not Fallout and didnt have all this press, would have faded into nothing after a few months

You're not even an asshole.

You're an asshole who doesn't even have his own opinion.

You're just gonna come off as a douchebag, he's not going to change his mind, you're just gonna be a shithead.

Then you're an asshole. Let him like the thing you fucking husk of a person. It's especially pathetic because you can't give reasons yourself. You're coming to the cynical virgins on this board to do it for you.

You need a reality check and Stephen needs a better friend.

In regard to the question, post-war Enclave advanced power armor can be found locked behind pre-war military establishments in Boston. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Not him but the storylines can still be linear in an open world game. Similar to what's described in this image.

Especially in open world RPGs where the player can come to expect more choices/freedom.

It's worth to mention that Oblivion and Skyrim both had fairly linear main quests. But they allowed the player (or just gave the illusion) to diverge by joining different factions that operate throughout the entire world.

Your friend has already decided in his mind that he's going to play this game and enjoy it, there's no need to be a killjoy under the guise of "I'm doing him a favor, really."

Let him have his fun and stop giving him a reason to put you under his blocked list.

It took until this reply for the silent intelligent people to speak up. I'd just like to remind everyone that we're always here, understanding on a level further than all the mongloids posting. Sometimes we speak up. It's usually logical and correct. Try to look out for this, anons. Have a good day Brian

I've played New Vegas through a couple of times. I'd say it's highly linear. You can remain on the side until around the time you've finished increasing reputation with the Boomers and then you can choose any of the four factions to take you to the end which alienates most of the others as a result. Fallout 4 does the same thing.

The rest of the ending is dedicated to how you handled each town which is generally an independent decision.

The power armor acting as more of a vehicle than armor is literally the only good new concept.

>here's a base building system that's overly complex and dumb

>give character 1 charisma
>find out you can't build any workbenches OR storefronts without 6 charisma + 2 perks
>>
I actually like Fallout 4 because the Commonwealth is a fun setting and I like that it's a functional shooter on top of the RPG aspects. You say it's "dumbed down", but I feel like they just removed the redundant and superfluous aspects. Who the fuck cares about weapon degradation and why did Barter and Speech have to be entirely separate skills? Making SPECIALand perks more prominent is better than just incrementally increasing numbers on your skill trees desu

I will concede that the main story sucks ass and the voiced protagonist with a predetermined backstory fucked with the player's ability to roleplay, but as a game I can just get in and PLAY? I think it's better than 3 and New Vegas.
>>
>>319259813
>have the same issue
>respec to have the proper charisma, all the other perks are garbage so it is solely for Local Leader
>never need extra workbenches, stores are absolute garbage, never give anything useful, cost more caps than you'll ever make back, and caps in general are worthless so using them to sell off scrap loses importance incredibly fast

Bethesda is great at creating the illusion of depth

>no trade routes in Fallout 3
what the fuck did they play the game?

My friend is pretty much the same. Devoted most of his life to playing it the week it came out and is convinced that it's one of the best games ever with an amazing story. Then when I tell him that it's literally Skyrim with guns he just says "lol Skyrim was bad tho".
>>
>>319237561

the tier 3 stores generate quite an amount of money over time, but they need 2 more perks, and if u invest in them and build a ton of purifiers they are a caps machine of industrial size.

>>319241471
So your whole motivation for this is to shit on your friend's enjoyment of a game because you don't like it? You're a cunt.

If you decide to -just- side with the Minutemen, you're fucked :)
You'll be stuck in purgatory of repeat quests forever.
There's a point in the game where you HAVE to get banned from the Institude to trigger the next quest for Minutemen.

This happened to me.
For how long you may ask?
I was lvl61 before I gave up and read online on how to trigger the next quest for the Minutemen faction.
