Depends on the hero. They range from 2k - 10k gold, or $4 - $10. The real money costs are shit, granted, but you get a ton of gold when you first start playing and it's easy to stack that shit; see >>319230857

Not him, but from my experience it's the most painfully slow unlock process in the genre. You get 20g for a loss and 30g for a win, so really the only way to actually get anywhere is to do dailies and earn gold from various rewards like getting heroes to certain levels. On average the dailies grant you an additional 100g per game, so like if it's "play 3 games with an assassin" it'll grant you 300 and if it's "win 3 games" it'll give you 600 because statistically you'll lose half.
Heroes cost anywhere between 2k and 15k gold, but most of them are closer to the latter side

Buy the ones you like. You can try them all and all the skins in a Practice mode.
But just play with the Free heroes for the first couple of weeks at least.

The 2k and 4k heroes are very good and versatile, you'll get a lot of mileage out of them, characters like Valla, Raynor, Muradin, Malfurion, Illidan, and Jaina. Make sure to try characters in the free rotation to see which ones you want to buy. I ended up loving the Monk who I'd never have given a chance and wound up buying him for 10k.
Normally I just play characters I like from their respective games, like Anub'arak and Diablo.
HotS fucking sucks but I kinda wanna play it again to see if its actually improved, which i'm sure it hasn't.
