I never played metroid for Samus, I played it for the sickass lore, atmosphere, boss fights, upgrades, and exploration. I think the Varia suit is cool, definitely cooler than a generic plug suit.

I think the best use of text for characterization was in Prime 2, when reading those personal logs from the doomed marines. They discuss Samus with an air of mystery around her, with some completely believing she takes on entire planets of Space Pirates and others being pretty sure that's all bull.
That's about how I'd expect it to be, and that game plays it completely straight.

I'm not sure the baby was a matter of mercy so much as it was guilt on the part of Samus. It was a direct parallel between Samus and Ridley, swooping down from the heavens to ruthlessly and seemingly effortlessly exterminating an entire species leaving only a child. Or maybe it wasn't guilt either and Samus reflected that when she was in that same scenario, she was rescued and trained until she fucked up everyone responsible.
Either way, she felt some responsibility.
