>On June 3, 2014, Nintendo Co., Ltd filed in the US via the USPTO a patent application titled "Supplemental Computing Devices For Game Consoles". It describes certain supplemental devices that a game console may utilize to increase the speed or quality of a user's gaming experience (in a cloud gaming context primarily); the device may provide processing and/or storage resources to game consoles to assist these game consoles in executing a game or performing other tasks (viewing or editing photos, watching videos, etc.) on the game console, among many other things. I find this quite peculiar, so let's dig into it. Here's the abstract and a few excerpts, and as usual the images (in very high quality this time). Interesting parts bolded/underlined.

At least it's not

This shit already exists

Literally any distributed system works like this

you know how jobless and underage a board is when nobody has a single clue about how patent works

WHAT

this goes way deeper than classic cloud. It doesn't only store dara, but also compute stuff. Like, the graphics or something. Bit no way western ping allow it to work. Shit's like tailored for Japan and Korea bandwith

>supplemental device

Why not include its functions in the same device?

>you can play your games with shit graphics paying less!
>if you want better graphics, buy this another shit!

Yeah no, that sounds like a terrible idea.

Consoles are going to make a literal jump to being PCs.

This'll be the final test to see if consumers will eat up just about any shitty idea they can come up with.

Right, that's why external graphics cards for PC are a thing? Thanks for Beta Testing PC kuks.

>Sony hinting PS4 revisions with better hardware
If they do this after the initial success they've had with the PS4, they're going to shoot themselves in the foot just as hard as Microsoft did with the Xbone DRM.

Nintendo got away with it because they did it with a handheld. I highly doubt people will be OK with it when they have to shell out ANOTHER 400 dollars.
>>
>>318791913
because the core system is probably still a wiiU. the new system will probably use more generic hardware meaning other companies can supercharge it if they want. The other pattent is especially made to allow games to work on standard mode (the wiiU version), but can work at better performance if you plug the good hardware. it's kinda like a PC but instead of changine each piece, you still have a functional core, and boost everything at once.
That way it avoids PC main problem with casuals, aka the fear of technology and the belief opening a computer requires a degree.
>>
>>318791056
Yeah, I always look at US patents in my free time, you fucking retard.
>>318792441
A lot of consoles have had later revisions with better hardware, you fucking retard.
>>
>>318792628
they have too since VR is proving to not run well on the current system. the core unlock is just the start.
>>
>>318792856
What's the point of them parking their CPUs anyways? Why would they NOT have their system running at 100% all the time?...unless their consoles can't HANDLE doing that.
>>
>>318793018
They made their OS more efficient so they have an extra core or something that developers can choose to use. Or so I heard. I haven't really been paying attention.
>>318792441
There already has been a PS4 revision with better hardware. Quieter, less power consuming, stuff like that.
>>
>>318793391
Let's be fair though. Getting down to semantics more efficiency IS better, but when people say better hardware, they're talking about more powerful hardware most of the time.

And that's what's scary, a main console going New 3DS on us.
>>
>>318793018
It's a standard practice, early on consoles reserve more resources to the OS, because it's still new and unoptimized, and less to the actual games, because as far as dev kits go it means a more streamlined and "safer" enviroment. Then as the OS becomes more efficient and developers get used to the platform, more power is unlocked for them to toy with.
>>
>>318793909
>standard
you literally only had your last system doing it.
>>
>>318794228
What? We know for a fact the X360, PS3, XBone and now PS4 all did it. And I might be misremembering things but I think the late PS2 models did something similar as well.
>>
>>318792236
Consoles will never be pcs. The future for consoles is streaming
>>
>>318791185
Your cloud device acts as a server or something for other people to use its proccessing power, and you get rrwarded for doing so, like if Folding@Home but with rewards.
>>
>>318794993
what if we dont want to share processing power or we're unable to do so?
>>
>>318787631
>buy more hardware to compensate for our inability to produce optimized code
Yeah nah, fuck off cunt
>>
>console plebs will waste more space and money on boxes when they could just build a pc
literally don't understand
>>
>>318795447
>Nintendo
>Unoptimized code

Come on, shit on them for anything else, but this is the one area where literally not a single other publisher can beat them on.
