I don't think they understock copies for that reason. Shit, they'd understock actually popular titles if that were the case, but that never happens. It's just that they usually have a pretty good idea of how much something will sell, and don't want to flood shelves for no reason. Most publishers have agreements to buy back unsold retail stock at a certain price. Imagine how stupid that is, shipping out 10 million disks and having to spend your own money buying back a couple million. As much as I hate the fact Pikmin 3 is 90 dollars on Amazon now, it's not like if Nintendo released another wave of copies they'd actually sell enough to matter. Retailers receive copies of the game even as far as a week or more before release and they sit on them until street date, provided they either aren't retarded or are no-name enough to get away with breaking it. That is why release day shipping is even possible and why Amazon offers it. This has nothing to do with ordering online and everything to do with the retailer not receiving their shipment when expected, thus it could easily happen, and even HAS happened, to a physical store. The risk of this happening is just as high regardless of how you order. You're the last survivors of Earth after its destruction, crash landed on an alien world, you have to chart the world and take down hostile life forms to ensure humanity's survival. Focus is on exploration, combat and resource gathering and management.
There's also Monster Hunter-esque instanced multiplayer missions, but the main focus is on the single player.
The combat system isn't for everyone, but I personally liked it a lot in the prequel (which, by the way, isn't related story-wise to this one, so even if you missed out, you can still jump in X) so I know I'll be fine, but I suggest you look into it before buying. If you go in expecting some kind of action game, you'll probably get burned.
