for the love of God OP star with IV. Then play the rest of the SNES one if you want, Tactics and at least one of the PS1 trilogy are a must play before moving to the modern age stuff.
They are all self-contained gaems, you can start at any one.
The FF golden era is 4 - 7, earlier games are average or experimental and after that it nosedives in quality, occasionaly popping back up only to nosedive harder again.

IV is one of the best ones and I'd recommend starting with it, play either the Complete Collection on the PSP or the DS version.

Not OP but the first FF that isn't XIV I'm playing is IV and it has yet to feel like a masterpiece. The combat seems so vanilla. I'm about at the part where youfight Ifirit and Shiva or something and the battle was so fucking boring.
It also feels like a grind to get your spells to unlock. Not that I can't just kill everything with the fisticuffs guy.

I always get into games with a certain mindset and I feel it's important because of the context in which the game was introduced to its current market. You can follow the chart I'm posting but take it with a grain of salt, don't drop the whole series if you don't like wherever you start from.
