it helps if you read the novels by Andrej Sapkowski to better understand the backstory. They purposely designed the witcher 3 to not need previous games but it is still nice to read and play previous instalments so you recognise familiar faces etc

I read the books before starting any of the games and I think it made them more enjoyable, but TW3 seems as if it would be just fine played alone too, they did a pretty good job of making it accessible to newcomers.

MC is based of a book series, he gets an amnesia before 1, so 1 can be played standalone.
in 2 he starts to regain his memories and starts the chain of events that will lead to 3. I played 2 first and I'm confident you can play it without 1.
in 3, he regains most if not all of his memories, including his book adventures. It's not necessary to play the game as the devs anticipated it being a popular release that will attract newcomers, and designed the game with that in mind, but playing the previous game and reading the books or at least their summaries will enhance the experience greatly.

You don't need to play 1, it is a good game but it isn't required to play 2 or 3 and it did not age very well. I highly recommend you play 2 before playing 3. You will still get alot of satisfaction out of 3 but there will be tons of backstory left out of context if you didn't play the second game. It is nice to know who the different nations are and who the rulers of those nations are. You learn about them in the second game.
Also overall, I still think the second game is better. Choices mean more and the story is more coherent. I like that Geralt isn't the center of the story but instead he is just the perspective by which you see it unfold.

Seems to me the game was written to fill you all in pretty quickly when something comes up, I barely remembered a lot of the stuff from the first game and it never hurt me.

Reading the books and playing the previous games are a double edged sword. You get to enjoy a lot of references and backstory that you otherwise wouldn't get, but TW3 makes a lot of horrible retcons and falls apart writing wise at the end, and you only really realize how shit the writing gets if you've read the books.

Playing the game first is fine. Within the game world, it catches you up to speed on pretty much any relevant plot point from the previous games in order to make it more accessible.
Read the books afterwards, if you liked it. They expand upon the universe more.

It's a slightly better Fable combat system
My main gripe is the "harder" difficulties are the definition of artificial difficulty. Armor doesn't matter because everything does so much damage and has the chance to one shot you. When locking on, you can't really see what is going to attack you from behind so the camera angle works against you. Most enemies always try attacking from behind.
