I absolutely don't praise undertale as if it was one of the best games of all time, but it's a pretty good game and most of the complaints I've seen about it seemed to be trying to find every little perk in the game. You grind out every area. Start with first save point. Press up+down near ceiling wall to make grinding easier. And don't leave that room until save point says "Determination." Also don't go to snowdin bridge until you've grinded area before snowdin until "Determinatio" aswell. Kill everything, if you spare one thing, you'll be on neutral run.

Nah, it's good for the same reasons Psycho Mantis was in MGS1, it did something unexpected by turning the act of saving and loading a game into an aspect of the narrative. It acknowledged the player's actions on a level we're not used to because most games treat the player like they're retarded.

As someone who's read plenty of decent VNs, it bugs me to no end that a shitty cripple porn VN is the one that has managed to gain TWO THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED continuous threads in /vg/, when so many VNs have had far better writing, story and porn. It has served as many people's gateway VN, and they all think it's above reproach, which destroys any meaningful discussion.
Now, see how this situation parallels the current state of undertale on /v/. Imagine if you personally didn't like the game, but you were constantly flooded by people saying it's GOAT. It would get annoying really fast.

For non-VN video game writing, I honestly thought undertale's was pretty good. Sure as hell beats anything from Skyrim, AssCreed, or any first-party Nintendo game that I can think of.
Out of curiosity, what games do you personally think have good writing? Probably the ones that I've liked the most would be Morrowind, 999 and VLR, but all of those games were extremely text-heavy, which gives them a bit of an unfair advantage IMO.
Undertale is certainly doesn't have as good of writing as most VNs or books, but if you limit the competition to games that have a comparable amount of text (like maybe a 2D zelda), I'd say it's still excellent for the amount of material.

Whole writing of undertale is pretty great, probably my favorite part of it though is meta commentary about rpgs and save system. That's probably the reason I put this game above any other triple a game since it had so much thought and effort put into it. Unfortunately I can't remember anything else with good writing in recent years aside from monster girl quest, all 3 parts.

Pretty much this. The whole reason people shat on Spec Ops is because it didn't give you a choice to do the bad thing or not, but then goes ahead to call you bad anyway. Also the actual gameplay sucked.
Undertale suffers from neither of those problems. Your choices matter - a lot. And the gameplay is simple yet addicting and can bring about a genuine sense of challenge in some cases.
