But yeah, AAA games spend fruckloads on voice acting and marketing, thus they need to move a lot to turn a profit. So maybe we're eventually seeing less AA games, but I doubt even that. AA/A/indie games are completely fine, though

Japan got fucked when the west wanted to make 30 million dollar games and most japanese devs were really just small companies wanting to make games in the 1-5 million range and once in awhile a big company makes a 30 million dollar game. in the end the best sellers were the 30 million dollar budget games and the less than 1 million to 5 million dollar game were on the most part ignored.

I wasn't alive for it, so I'll probably get a majority of this wrong, but I believe back then in 1983 Atari was the biggest dick around in the video game industry, it sold the most consoles and had the most games and shit.
The issue was that Atari had no sense of QA (like Steam nowadays) and let every single bit of shovelware on it's platform. Naturally, this pissed off the consumer base, and meant that the hundreds of thousands/millions(?) of expected sales didn't happen. No confidence in the industry = no sales = bad business. I believe it's why ET for the 2600 is so well-known, it's sometimes blamed alone for the crash of 1983.
So Atari basically shat itself that year, and I believe video gaming only started rising in confidence again when Nintendo released the NES, and also first introduced their Seal of Approval, which back then was a PR thing with real purpose (maybe), instead of a generic seal like it's used today.
Why it won't happen today? I'm not entirely sure if this is correct, but Atari basically flaunted it's power with about as much subtlety as a truck horn, so people caught on that they were being fucked quickly, not to mention that the internet back then was basically non-existent and physical copies were all the thing, so everyone had these shit games developed that no stores wanted and no customers wanted and it was all this wasted money. The internet age and digital copies being much more prevelant, plus much more clever PR and advertisitng, plus a much, much larger industry means that it would take the largest market in video gaming (mobile? casual? console?) to opt-out of the industry, and at least one large contender to bankrupt because of it.
I don't see it happening.

The current state of things deserves to crash. Hopefully with as accessible as development is now, people who have a passion to make games will rebuild. "Indie devs" won't be a problem anymore because there won't be an over saturated market to exploit.

there were no flood controls for the market. The market was overturned with really terrible games. consumer confidence went to shit and a load of bad deals went through. Also Atrai japan is the reason why namco was born. Nintendo in the US controlled how many games a publisher could release in a year. this is why companies like Konami had other game companies(ultra) under them so that nintendo would let them release more games.
