HL3 is easily one of the most anticipated games of ALL TIME. It's up there with an FFVII remake and Shenmue 3, and look at the hype and excitement they generated.

Anything said here has been said 1000x before. Valve already makes a metric shit ton of cash from steam, and the micro-transactions
in TF2, Dota, and CS:GO. As far as a matter of making money goes, it would only require them to spend more resources and man-hours
on a project that would take away from their already endless flow of cash. If anything HL3 would probably be a net loss overall for Valve,
though the actual loss in revenue for them would be so negligible I'd assume Gabe uses the estimated loss in cash to wipe his ass on a
daily basis.
Of course, there's always the chance that Gabe actually wants to make and ends to his creation, and let Half Life fans finally be at peace.
This is probably one of the biggest shots in the dark of all time though, judging from Gabe's recent behavior over the last few years, with
the influx of micro-transactions into their games, as well as the marketplace and the percentage they take from all sales, and the most
recent attempt of adding paid mods, though this was cancelled due to the major backlash they received from basically everyone (though I've
heard Valve still wants to re-implement it again at some point.)
If I had to wager a bet on if this game would be released in the next decade, I'd be very firm in my belief of saying no. The evidence is all too
strong is supporting that Gabe and Valve have shifted away from game production, and instead wish to focus on Steam entirely. A shame indeed
that a man once held in high regards by many has shifted so far and in such a disgusting light from his original self.

they all make games but the main source of money is the cut that valve gets for every game that gets sold on steam.
They dont need to make new games and making new games means they are wasting resources where they don't need to.
CS:Go and Dota 2 are games that will be played everday for years and are more of a system seller that people use steam, all single player games stay in the top 10 for afew months and then drop down, but CS and Dota are always in the top 3 for years and will stay there for years also the microtransactions in the game makes sure that this games will produce profit in the future with not much investment.
There is literally 0 reason why they should make half life 3 a single player game without micro-transaction , its just not a long-term investment for Valve.

the story of Portal 2, how they scrapped a lot of stuff really close to the deadline is really interesting. I imagine the stories of what has been happening in the HL3 project, especially around the time they originally announced the release date for it, must be great.
