There are no monolithic problems with it, but there are a hundred little things that make it very frustrating to play. Like an economy that's somehow both dumbed down AND harder to use, the useless home city mechanic, an extremely bland campaign, little variety between the civs, awful music, building number limits, terrible ship battle animations and controls, and a bunch of others. It's very pretty, though.

It's my favorite of the 3, but that's an unpopular opinion. I like the trains for when you find yourself lacking a ready resource or if a game is going for too long. I like the factions and their uniques (Great Bombard, Dutch jew factories), and you can see the direct ties from AoE2 to 3 (castles into forts, the upgrade system, etc.). It's plenty "an AoE game," but the cards, trains, explorer-hero are definitely a step in a different direction and brought some friction. Relics are replaced by treasures, and wololo was reduced to a text input rather than a unitstill GOAT for LAN parties.
Oh, and building caps were shitty. Really shitty. But then, towers were buffed a lot, so without a cap, it just wouldn't play well.I like the ships' special attacks too.

They're Woad Raiders on crack, also more likely to kill villagers in less hits. More fragile but have ridiculously high attack. With Arson you can level buildings quite quickly. Otherwise yeah, the Ethiopians are a supposed archer civ with that +15% attack speed for them, I also like the free Pike/Halb upgrades and food/gold on age up but the team bonus is shit.
Malian Gbetos though are Throwing Axemen on crack and are the only real thing destroying massed War Wagons. Good wood/gold economy too and their champions are almost Huskarls.
