Because you can only pick one of those two. Indian characters run on orientalistic stereotype. And stereotypes for Indians are hardly making them sympathetic, not to mention competent. Meanwhile, their own culture image of perfect protagonist is a fucking Mary Sue with massive mustache - just read any of their epics or pretty much anything made after them.
Long story short - you would have to make a character that breaks stereotypes and is not made according to Indian standards. Cue instant "BUT THAT'S SJW!", since your brain just registered "not a stereotype".
Besides, there is more than just ethnicity that makes a character. And the sad truth about Indian characters is that ethnics is all they've got as their defining trait
