Tactics. The plot was a wonderful tale of politics and betrayal, it encompassed a grand scale and focused on how the main character of any story isn't always the one who did all the work. (Meaning Delita who the history books focus on) On top of that I really enjoyed the job system and the amount of variety you could add to your characters based on what classes skills you chose for them. I'm hoping we someday get a game that is similar to it, if not just a solid PC port.

The secret to VII's success is its dialogue more than anything
The rest of the package is great but if they didn't do such a good job of making everyone sound realistic by having such rough dialogue people wouldn't have become nearly as attached. Barret's reaction to the Plate being dropped is one of the most authentic looking scenes in any FF by far. I don't get why people say VII has a bad translation because of a few grammar errors here and there, the dialogue is phenomenal.

So much of the promotional jazz of the game featured them. The fact that they were a big part of this world was a major showcase point. Early on they tease us by giving them all the familiar enemy/summon names and the main protag even has aspirations of being a pilot, while the more mature level headed party member already is one.
And in the end they appear very little in the game. An early dungeon, the final dungeon, and two travel systems you won't even use beyond story reasons because of save crystals.

I'm guessing you didn't venture too much beyond the main story then.
These 2 travel systems serve you well in obtaining a lot of the gear in the game - because they allow you to keep chains and move across the map without breaking the chain (something Save Crystals do).
For example, the Grand Helm (despite being a pretty shit helm), can't be obtained properly without using both the Chocobo and the Strahl - because you have to chain Golems in the Mosphoran Highwaste, Chocobo yourself to a Strahl hotspot (which you can mess up if you don't run the right route), before taking the Strahl to the Pharos.
The Grand Helm then spawns from a rare mob called Tower who spawns there.

VIII has a focused, cohesive narrative.
All you have to do if you want to understand it is to accept that the characters, locations and events do not literally exist. It's all fiction, and what's important isn't the literal plot about a mercenary becoming involved in armed conflict between nations and time-traveling witches. What IS important is the meaning of the imagery that was chosen.And obviously, FFVIII isn't a special case, all games can be understood using this approach.

When I think of FF4, the part immediately comes to mind is the intro when Cecil is still the captain of Red Wings, and he automatically destroys a bunch of monsters with magic items. It was disappointing that the DS/PC version removed this because it made Cecil's position of Captain seem powerful, and makes his later demotion that much more impacting.
And of course Rydia's growth through the game, she's basically the Gohan of this game, the way she calls in Mist Dragon to rescue the party from Golbez, that's like Mystic Gohan wrecking Buu. It's hilarious how her child form can surpass Tellah's 90 MP cap.
