Like the Ridley mod. It's pretty well put together for something done by one person, but you probably couldn't get a consensus on whether it deserves to be in a tourney build or not, some people might think it's up to snuff while others would consider it amateur shit, maybe good for a beginner but not up to the standards of the official PM characters. And Ridley is probably the most well-liked unofficial character, people would have an even harder time getting something like Waluigi or Bomberman in a tourney build but you'd probably find people still pushing for it.
You're right that any MUGEN-tier shit is unlikely to gain anything too sizeable, but it seems like it'd lead to a large amount of shitposting for any topic with two opposite sides of sizeable followers.

Also, I'm not sure why they would defend PMDT when they basically pulled a huge "fuck you." by halting all progress after teasing content like they've been doing. They should've released the update THEN said it would be the very last PM patch. Bullshit. Project M, and Smash Bros modding in general has been around for years and Nintendo hasn't lifted a finger beyond trying to keep it out of tournaments. There is no legal precedent for fan projects or hacks, of Nintendo games or any others, being hit with anything worse than a cease and desist. Even when a new PM release came out on the heels of Smash 4, Nintendo didn't bat an eye.
Regardless of whether or not development continues, regardless of whether it would be done by PMDT or by fans, the game will continue to be distributed and played. Nobody, not even on the (former) PMDT, is going around telling people to stop playing PM altogether to avoid legal trouble, and they have no trouble with PM 3.6 mirrors on Smashboards. So, they don't seem to feel any pressure or danger from what they've already done; yet, people outside the PMDT making the same kind of modifications they did on a smaller scale scares them?
The only way I can imagine such a thing being possible is if the PMDT and Nintendo reached some kind of agreement to cease development, but PMDT says no such thing happened.
What harm could making further additions possibly cause, especially if done by a group unrelated to the PMDT? If Nintendo can take legal action against the PMDT because Joe Shmoe from 4chan released a finished version of Lyn and Knuckles, then they sure as hell have just as good of a case, if not a better one, to take legal action against the current 3.6 release.

Just drop it in your wii folder on Dolphin or SD card.
If you wanna mess around in there, like say bring out sami. use winimage and open the raw file and rename everything sami to snake. and delete snake's file. If you want snake back, just extract your download again.

I agree with you for the most part. If I had it my way I'd of pushed to just release 4.0 and then stop but I'm just a lowly pmdev without much influence.
What we were doing was illegal, we were misrepresenting their brands and were confusing the market. Nintendo could of come after us anytime they wanted and everyone would have been fucked. The only thing stopping them was they didn't care, but we apparently received information that they started caring so we stopped.
It wouldn't even of been about the money or anything they probably would of just wanted to make an example out us to try and get everyone to stop fucking around with their shit.
Everyone should be safe now since the main website shut down but if a new version of PM keeps getting ditrubuted and gains attention, there's still nothing stopping them from coming after the ones responsible. They hold every right to. Please continue doing what you love but just be careful.
