I know people thought poorly of it but I have no idea why. I loved the way reinforcements didnt magically appear out of buildings but needed an LZ and transport to bring them in. Infantry could capture buildings and have firefight in said buildings, the extremely unique feel of the Rebellion to the Empire, the missions were challenging and had a decent variety, and a great story.

Force Commander was the haflway point between Rebellion that preceded it and Empire that came after it when you think about it. Rebellion had a great grand strategy aspect, the world hopping, system control, and even an interest space combat set up along with the usage of agents, unit types, garrison forces, etc...
Empire took that several step forwards. But Commander's biggest failing was it felt extremely cubersome in actual implementation and the game had a steep learning curves. Of course I was about 12 years old when the game came out so that might be a factor.

Had they released it as a 2D game (like i heard it originally was) or simply planned 3D from the start and released a little later with more work I think it was have been extremely well received. It just has a ton of great ideas that simply needed a lot more polish.

The ending was insultingly incomplete.
The villains were terrible (Ill take generic villian Malak over Darth Plot Armor and Darth "literally nothing to this guy")

Finally the setting and plot I thought was terrible. (You go from a war for the very survival of your faction in the first game to a setting where the faction is rebuilding after a war and your job is to hunt a few people down to ask them questions)
I can see how some people like the characters as everyone has different taste on what they like in characters. But the plot? The villains? The missing content? The fact it spends all its time saying that everything we know about Star Wars is a lie? I just dont get it.

The villains are meant to be perceived as threats, forces of nature, each symbolic of the Sith's failings. Not characters in the traditional sense if that's what you were expecting. Malak, however, is neither interesting or threatening.
And for whatever reason you hate the companions, it isn't a valid criticism, they were all well written, each one's personality and history synchronizing perfectly with the story's themes, each one with a considerable amount of depth in comparison the first Kotor. The same goes for Kreia ten fold.
Finally the setting and the plot were intended to be considerably darker in comparison to its predecessor. I enjoyed traveling a broken republic, running from and hunting an unknown threat, gathering the last remnants of a dying order across shattered worlds.
Even the ending can be improved by the restored content mod.
Everything about Kotor 2's writing, gameplay and setting is superior to the original.

I think Kreia is one of the most well written characters of the Star Wars universe, honestly. The game frames a grayer tone from the outset, with the republic and Jedi Order extinguished, or at least considerably weakend, and the Sith lurking in the shadows you're fighting for survival with no known allies against an unknown threat from Peragus throughout the rest of the game. Since you're not obligated to the light side, like in the former game where up until the choice in the Rakatan Temple the player is forced to cooperate with the Jedi Order against the Sith Empire, you have more control over your character and functionally more gray to sift through. Kreia is the epitome of the gray because she does not stick to the concepts of light and dark. She realizes that morality, and the force, are both spectrums.
