Hoshido isn't bad but it's really bare bones and easy as fuck. The plot is nothing new but it isn't bad.
Nohr has some damn good maps, some of the best in the series. Good difficulty. Story is a total mess.
IK is a joke. The difficulty is pathetic and the maps are just terrible. Like 90% of them are "gimmick maps" with no old-fashioned tactics or anything. The story is comically bad. It may actually have the worst story in any post-90s videogame I've ever played and that's not an exaggeration.
Overall, the biggest problem is that it feels like one game that they split in to 3 separate games. There's a lot of good content in there, IS just chose the worst possible way to deliver it.
Also they need to hire the guy who wrote the tellius stories back again, or at the very least awakening. The current writer is so fucking terrible.

It's not game breaking, but Awakening had a bunch of glitches added by localization that were never solved. There was the issue with the voices glitching if you choose Japanese and then reset the game (all voices automatically turned back to English, aside from CGs).
There were also some glitches involving the Einherjar - enemy female Einherjar had an in-battle voice in Japanese VA even though they shouldn't have one; if you added Einherjar to your spotpass party, your group was read as a generic default party by other systems, also Einherjar didn't get exp for curing each other.

Fates' problem isn't a cliche story though. Hoshido is the most cliche one and it's generally considered the best. The problem is the stupid plot device tied to the third route, which just creates inconsistencies with the other ones, and a certain really stupid plot device that drives the 2nd half of the Nohr route.

Based on the Japanese release, you'll get an Awakening crossover DLC for free (where you get one seal for Lodestar and Great Lord), alongside one other special conversation thing where you get a seal for either ballistician or witch. If you're on a low enough firmware, just get a gateway and you can dump the games and run the patch. They have a tutorial on their site. If your on a higher firmware, and cant use things like gateway or run custom cias, there have been new exploits the past few months, even for 3ds that are completely up to date. You have to get the homebrew launcher working, which can involve having to buy a compatible game that let's you run the exploit, but you can still run the patch an alternative way this way.
