If it does it is looking like it will barely scrape by. And considering they seemed to have been thinking they would get over funded and be able to make extra content, that isn't good for them. But that is back on them for how they went about this whole project.

I would disagree about the demo idea. It would matter around how much they ask for per person as a minimum. Say $5 gets you a demo with 1-2 hours content that shows off the proper mechanics, and polished art and voice work. Then if the full game does need to be crowd funded offer a discount to the original demo backers or something for the final product, or just have something as a bonus for those that did and re-upped for the game.
As for the pitch etc, I agree. The market either just isn't there, or rightfully apprehensive about them being able to deliver on their promises. I know that is my biggest concern. I am not opposed to their art direction or setting, even if they are secretly going full SJW or not. I just don't believe in putting in for a dev inexperienced with this genre with just promises. Especially after the prototype.
I honestly believe there could have been a real market for the game, based on the core game play idea and mechanics. But they have failed to properly manage the market's perspective of their product, and that has hurt them.
All we can do now is wait to see how history judges it.

Kind of a problem with that logic either way is that people are more willing to donate to a project that looks like it'll get funded. That makes no sense if you think about it, but that's how people behave. So the idea of increasing the odds they'll get backed to try to keep them from getting backed is... backwards.

The character roster reads like a tumblr checklist of inclusiveness. The only things missing is trans and gay. Two things of which you can't immediately identify by sight. Individually by themselves the characters don't necessarily just out as that, but together as a roster it paints a pretty clear picture.
And ultimately if that wasn't their intent, then they have failed by not stating that and managing the perception of their product. Either they are ignorant of the market issues at the moment, or they wanted to play both sides and try to reap the benefits. Neither is an enticing prospect.
