Vidya merch is usually fine if it's recognizable primarily by fans of said vidya merch. Though this tends to be the best merchandise in general. If you make someone look at your attire and see almost nothing, they will think nothing of it and look elsewhere. If they see a logo or a symbol or a few words, they will try to interpret it, fail, give up, and ignore it. If it's a fan, however, they will take one passing glance and immediately understand.
In a fairly recent example, I saw some kid wearing an Undertale shirt that had a red heart and the words "But it refused" underneath it. Nothing else. From my workstation, I didn't want to bring light to it, but it looked pretty nice and subtle, and a fan of the game would immediately recognize it. A terrible example, however, was the kid next to him, wearing a Disturbed shirt that was just an album cover.
