Why? You're either paying 170~ for something you'll replace in a few years or 340~ for something that's fucked out of the box. The 970 has 50% better performance than the 960 for double the price.

Neither will have good DX12 support and the new cards are literally months away. The 960 will play anything out right now and do it well for half the price of the 970.

Absolutely not worth it unless you have more money than you know what to do with, in which case this argument is null because you're already running a titan.
>>
>>318445603
It is better, because it'll unload textures as needed, instead of simply hitting 3.5gb, thinking it can keep going, and break down like your mom after realizing you'll never amount to shit.

That is because the driver actively works to prevent it. Problem is due to how Nvidia cut down the 980 to make the 970 the last partition is in a XOR situation - reading or writing to it tanks bandwidth of the entire card.

See the bigger picture as well, the second Nvidia ditches driver optimisations for it (lel kepler) they won't be writing game specific code to prevent said tanking happening, should a game merely demand moar vram with little regard in how it gets it.

>>
Quick question: Can my 600W power supply handle an upgrade from a R9 390 to a 390X?
>>
>>318448029

Nvidia doesn't "gimp" older cards. They introduce better cards that do certain things better, which allow developers to do new effects which don't run as well on older cards.

A 780 is just as good today as it was on release, but its poor performance with tessellation is a bigger deal today because developers have begun to make heavy use of it with things like Hairworks.

Anyone fighting against better graphics that utilize better hardware is no better than a fucking console player.

IT'S NOT FUCKING FAIR

THIS ISN'T THE WAS IT'S MEANT TO BE PLAYED
>>
Is there really a need to upgrade each generation, or do you wait a few years?
>>
I think a big problem with Nvidia's tech like Hairworks and God Rays is that it isn't immediately apparent what's being done in screenshots, so you have people like >>318448901 who don't understand what they do and can't tell anything's different from screenshots

The performance cost of those features is directly related to the quality of the effect. Think of each god ray or strand of hair as a straight line. Increasing tessellation splits that line into more segments, increasing the quality of the effect when the lines move or are otherwise interacted with. Increasing tessellation in hairworks creates smoother hair, and increasing tessellation in god rays creates sharper, more well defined rays that look really neat as you round a corner and they appear.

But you could never tell that that's happening from a static screenshot, so you get a lot of misinformation from uninformed users who spout nonsense about how nothing changes when you increase the settings.

With Nvidia there is

Kepler now gets 30fps in modern games
>>
>>318449360
For Nvidia users, usually yes.

AMD not so much. It's why they have trouble selling cards - if your two year old shit still competes with Maxwell and even beats it, there is literally no reason to upgrade.

It's what AMD gets for being not going all jew.
>>
>>318449415
No, you'll need around 1000W
>>
>>318449360

If you want to stay bleeding edge? An upgrade a year keeps the goyim in fear. My personal rule is only upgrade when a single card offers double performance of your current one, which typically translates to a 2-3 year cycle.

>>318449415

You'd have to do your research as the 295x2 (2x290x) will pull 500w on its own and thats factoring in watercooling on the cores (and lower temps = lower power draw).
>>
>>318446663
Only Ultra grass really does that to every card.
>>
>>318449230
>/r/pcmasterrace
>>
>>318449360

With AMD you're actually punished for upgrading frequently because it takes them 3~4 years to get drivers that make effective use of their hardware.
>>
>>318444075
Games run like shit cause nvidia owns the biz.

Lol, if you cant beat em, join em.

Why the fuck would i buy 390 when i fucking know everything is optimised for nvidia.. Deal with it. Your like that shitty hipster fan boy who tricked me into getting an amd card 5 yrs ago. Thank god i have nvidia now.
>>

>and lower temps = lower power draw
Not necessarily

You can have low temps with high power draw if you have a cooler powerful enough to dissipate the heat

There's like, two fucking enemies in Witcher 3 that actually benefit much from the extra tessellation. The reality is that the developers made a pretty good hair mesh, or god rays, or whatever and optimized them pretty well, whereas most of Nvidia's settings are just superlative and shit on framerates for minimal gain. The only "Nvidia-specific" settiing I've ever enabled in their soft shadows in GTAV, and that one ran perfectly well on AMD too.
>>
I've been trying to decide if I want a 290X or a 390. From what I've read, there's only a little bit of a difference performance wise. Should I just go with the 290X?

The 970 is the optimal card for beginners into the high end market.
It's the AK47 of cards.

I can handle anything for the forseeable future in 1080p. It isn't perfect, but it gets the job done and you'll leave any X1/PS4 user in the dust.

If you want to go even harder, skip the 390 and go to the next tier up.

problem with this is it only lasts as long as the current generation of cards. The moment they launch the 1000 series they couldn't care less about you.

Honestly I dislike AMD GPU's a lot, but Nvidia intentionally gimped the 970 to sell the 980ti. Nvidia does not respect you as a customer and you are better off purchasing AMD graphics cards. While you may not get the drivers immediately, they are better for price vs. performance compared to nvidia after both cards have drivers for whatever game you are playing.

Between the 390 and the 970 there is not choice, the 390 is better by far. In that price range 390 is better. A more fair comparison would be with the 980 or 980ti. If you have the buck i would go for the ti.

Also have in mind that nvidia 900 series are going to be gimped by pascal. so maybe go amd.

Curious anon here.
My computer (which is about 5 years old) has a GeForce 9400 GT, which has like 512 mb RAM. I've been thinking about upgrading to another Nvidia product, but the r9 Radeon seems to do the job as well.
I just got GTA V, and I'm not doing too well. About 9-15 fps, and ocasionally I'll just hit 1-2 for about three minutes or so.
Basically, should I get the 390?
