Video games aren't really known for Oscar worthy acting.
What are some instances in vidya where the voice acting was fantastic or at least on par with film?
The only ones I see regularly praised are Vaas from FC3 and Joel / Ellie from TLOU.
YouTube links to cool monologues or particular lines would be appreciated.
Any gen/platform welcome
Just want some GOAT VA work to listen to because I'm bored.
One and only shameful self bump
...Ah Kos, or some say Kosm....
Xenoblade Chronicles is a lot of fun
Major fucking spoilers here though

Awoo~
I honestly can't think of any that's on par with movies
The kingdom hearts series has meh voice DIRECTING but awesome acting. Jesse in Days movie was GOAT
All the Souls games

Legacy of Kain.
Gta 5 probably has the best voice acting of any game
>>318432760
And even that's not on par with a shitty TV series on Fox.
In the saboteur skylar does the "aristocratic english girl" really well

for some reason the writing in video games is always lower quality than Hollywood's, especially when it comes to cussing, not only do they seem to cuss so often even when it isn't appropriate they always pronounce it like children whose parents are not around, so it never sounds natural.

>for some reason the writing in video games is always lower quality than Hollywood's
Because if video game writers were good writers they'd be writing movies.
Kaz is great in TPP. Campbell is also great in MGS2, it's very subtle but he sounds much more robotic than he does in MGS1 and 4.

You must not get around much if the only games you see regularly are that recent.
You can't bring up Legacy of Kain without someone praising the voice acting. It even had bonus footage on the disk that showed behind the scenes and was probably the first look into the world of voice acting for a lot of people who played it back when.

>You can't bring up Legacy of Kain without someone praising the voice acting.
You kinda have to, there's no much else to praise. The visuals were always kinda iffy when they came out, the story was silly, and the gameplay was always bad. But goddamn that acting, it made you care about the sillyness.
>>318436681
apparently you can't bring up voice acting without someone praising legacy of kain, either
Problem is the writing and the acting need to sync up which is where directors come in for movies which doesnt really exist on the video game side of things.
For examples of how to do it right just listen to the entire dawn of war series or the guy in darkest dungeon.

most voice actors from oblivion were pretty good most of the time. It's just that they aren't very numerous so you always hear the same people.
Well I've just finished up FFXII so I'm going to go with Balthier. Gideon Emery nailed his character and he was a real pleasure to listen to throughout the game, especially considering that some of the other voices used in the game are questionable at best and laughable at worst.

Nier has 10/10 voice acting, regardless of what you think of the gameplay.
It's like they hired all of the greatest voice actors in one single game.
>>318437007
>the entire dawn of war series
All I think of when it comes to dawn of war voice acting is Commander Boreale

Casting and Direction in vidya is a giant circlejerk and the real satan here
yenn's performance was pretty good.

Shulk's VA is probably one of my favorite voice acting performances.

I see you have an eye for things, guns's not just 'bout shootin', it's 'bout reloadin'. You'll know what I'm talkin' 'bout.
Red Dead Redemption
Grand Theft Auto V
Transistor (even though there's like, 3 VA's)
Vaas from FC3
All of the Bioshock games, especially the first and third ones
Maybe Spec Ops: The Line, but idk, I'd havta play it again.
>>318438538
Why would you emphasise Bioshock 1 and 2 when Sofia Lamb is probably the best voiced character in the series?
>>318435614
I fucking love Kazs voice.

Stephen Fry as the narrator for LBP did a great job; of course it IS Stephen Fry.
>>318437815
damn it was actually pretty painful to see her look deeply hurt after you had to dump her

Sorry I forgot to mention
I didn't play much of Bioshock 2, so I don't feel like I can formulate an opinion on it really.

The Legacy of Kain series has the best voice acting in the medium, bar none.
The President of the United-fucking-States-of-America. Who'd you think I was talking about? Who the fu - Who is - What - I should kick your fucking ass, who is this?
>>318439193
Stephen is always great. It's a shame LBP2 had voice acting for all the characters. It took away a lot of the charm.
>>318427870
tony jay in legacy of kain, or in a short role in icewind dale 1
simon templeman in legacy of kain, and most other things he's in
david warner in baldurs gate 2
