The point of some characters is to get you nvested and attached to them, so you'll not want bad stuff to happen to them. Happens in all fiction, only in videogames, sometimes you get a choice. (Undertale tries to do its best to show just because you have this choice doesn't mean you should, but it's a bunch of blablahblah).
Regardless, you may or may not like some characters. After doing true pacifist, I decided I didn't like most of them and wouldn't mind killing. I do think Sans and Flowey were the well made characters, so my headcanon is Sans being locked repeating the final fight over and over, since that's pretty much all I did after being done with the game. (My record was finishing him with 36 HP, could improve).
Anyway, were the characters more appealing to me, I'd spare them. I wouldn't play a game where I killed my waifu, for instance, but I can see some people do like Undertale's cast in general, so more power to those fags, I guess.
