One of the best side bits of the game is the corporate culture satire in the datafiles you collect. At one point one of the higher ups uses the point that there's really no need for this assassins/templar/observatory stuff in a story about pirates. The other says they should include it to expand their demographic.

the pirate stuff is repetitive and boring after the first hour or so

£16 or so is a bit too much, or whatever your regional equivalent is right now, but it's an enjoyable game for most of its duration. The Assassin bits are quite dull, as they usually are but the boat bits are very fun.
Don't bother with DLC, you'll get your fill of it all from the base game though.

I'm a big AC fan and I loved Black Flag. The "outsider looking in and getting roped into the secret battle" was a neat story.
Also Edward was really likeable for a douchebag pirate. And he gets better.

Edward just busting his way into millennia old conspiracies in a get rich quick scheme was the best part of the story. He even pickpockets the templars at their meeting.
There's also a nice story about how low he gets. He starts out hanging out with Blackbeard and Hornigold, pirates with some amount of character. Then ends up with Vane and Rackram, basically just petty criminals with no real ambition. It's a nice subtle thing.
Him getting his shit together in the end was nice, even if apparently it all goes to shit again later. I don't know, I haven't read any of that stuff myself.

This was my favorite one. I was constantly trying to get it to play. It's a shame that travel time ends up not quite allowing for a full shanty, but they would've had to make the map pointlessly larger to accommodate it. Just how it goes, I guess.

It's honestly amazing how little of a shit they gave for making things line up. I think the "first" fort attacking memory shows up when you're in the souther half of the map, despite you probably clearing out about 3 or 4 of those things already just to get there. You can do half of the Assassination missions before Edward even knows who the assassins are.

This is the most perplexing game Ubisoft has ever created. Sailing around and being a Pirate was fucking great fun then they force the usual Ass Creed shit down your throat. All I wanted to do was get past the actual Assassin's Creed parts and go back sailing again.
I feels as if it was going to be it's own game and then Ubisoft thought 'fuck that make it an AC game' at the last minute.
Black Flag is a great game trapped inside a shit one.

I liked the stress of dealing with sharks, air supply and how amazing the underwater environment was. Thats just me. I didn't do all of the challenges and they could get frustrating, but I was glad they were there and I could do them when I felt like it.

It's pretty much the same, except you're in the North Atlantic, Appalachian River Valley and Arctic Ocean rather than the Caribbean. Mechanics are mostly the same.
There's only one "real" city, New York, but in turn the scattered settlements you find out in the ocean are much bigger than the ones you would find in Black Flag.
