Arena was better than Oblivion though. Even Shadowkey, Redguard and Battlespire were better.
>>318397382
Still better than Skyrim's main quest and civil war quest though. Those were so exceptionally bad and the game so disappointing, it made me expect nothing from any RPG since then.

Its main quest had its moments, it's still the best TES game to date, and don't give me that shit about morrowind being better, it's just not.

>Generic fantasy world
Fantasy is an old genre, you can't expect a reinvention of the wheel. As for its atmosphere it beats morrowind and especially Skyrims out of the ball park.
>Unpickable locks
Not true, Oblivion actually had the best lock picking out of any Bethesda game, you could pick any lock at any level but it is much harder than any other beth title
>Unkillable NPCs
Mods I guess, as a design choice it makes sense, if you kill a crucial NPC you can't further the stories progression. It'd be a retarded design choice to let you do that.
>Optional fast travel that doesn't play any importance into any of the quests, NPCs actually walk to their locations and you can follow them to RP, nothing is stopping you and they haven't neglected those who don't fast travel.

No it would not you retard mouthbreathing mongoloid. It'd be a ROLE PLAYING GAME that gives the player FREEDOM and CONSEQUENCES for their actions. >Fantasy is an old genre
At least Morrowind mixed it up a bit, having all these incredible exotic locales. Dark elves living in the shells of giant crabs, riding Silt Striders, farming these bizzarre animals, wearing ornate bone armor. Oblivion was just Swamp town, forest town, another swamp town, snowy town with boring shit that I could mostly see in real life if I wanted to.
>You could pick any lock at any level
No, there were many doors which couldn't be picked at all, as opposed to Morrowind which had maybe two or three unpickable doors in the entire game
>Mods
Irrelevant, I'm judging the core game. Also Morrowind had a great way of dealing with killing important NPCs, you kill the wrong guy, you get a message telling you that you fucked up and you can either continue in your fucked up world or reload.
>NPCs actually walk to their locations
I'll give you that, NPC timetables is one MAJOR advantage Oblivion had over Morrowind, but it is one of the few (one of the others being better alchemy).

>le "everything is a meme" meme
>>318398583
Waiting on an actual rebuttal, and that is not what I said.
>>318398662
It's not broken, it's a fail safe so that the general public who don't understand the game so well won't accidentally kill a crucial NPC, play for 6 hours on side quests, and come back to the main quest not realizing he's basically fucked.
>It'd be fun to waste 6 hours on a game you can no longer complete
Just leave, you don't know shit about game design.
>>318397190
>>318398836
Those locks were unpickable so that the pkayer could follow the narrative given by NPCs, it could of been handled better but as a game design choice it makes sense, I actually enjoyed the story for my first play through and the RP aspects on my others.
>Mods irrelivent to a beth game
Mods are crucial for these games, the replay value they add and quality of life is insane, I can still comfortably replay modded Oblivion and log a couple hundred hours, they are in no way irrelevant.
>Killing crucial NPC pushes players to save scum
That's 100* worse than the crucial NPCs
>>318399497
Still, he's talking about the base game. Mods are crucial to a Beth game, that's true, since Beth can't even provide a good base game experience and you need mods to fix fucking everything. But it's irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
>>318397893
If only he did not look like Dr. Zaius.
>>318399683
All modern beth games come out and the devs say hey, this isn't for everyone so go use this creation kit it's almost exactly what we work with, have fun and make it your own.
And you're going to ignore that and say the base game is shit because X constriction that makes sense because Y demograph or Z limitations.
The game lets you remove those limitations and stylize the game for you, I think it's unfair to judge a game with freedom most games lack based off of the assumption that the freedom the game provides doesn't count.
>>318399497
And you seem to be forgetting that there are just as many Morrowind mods which add extra functionality. So instead of saying "well Oblivion has this mod but Morrowind has this mod" we judge the core games because that's what the developers put in front of us.
And how is the game letting you kill anyone you want worse? You actually have a fucking option at least instead of Oblivion which holds your hand so hard that it may as well just be a movie. You say it encourages save scumming? Why? You have the option to save scum or not, just like Oblivion's fast travel is optional as you said in your previous post?
So optional things are perfectly fine when they're in your favorite game but they're a decision that makes it "100* worse" when you're against a game? If you're a faggot that save scums then you're as bad as someone who fast travels between every city and never explores the country side.
Wheres the lewdmod for oblivion pics?
But holy fuck! All Bethshit games are funny only with mods
>>318398662
You're a huge faggot
What kind of person actually RPing just randomly kills people they don't like? Even in a genre with pure freedom (pen and paper RPG) usually you don't get away with this because it's fucking retarded
I don't like essentials either but I'm not pretending it's because of RP value
>>318397190
>let me see your dick
>>318400004
Your argument is solid, don't get me wrong, it's just still irrelevant. The modding capabilities offered still doesn't mean that Beth didn't make lazy design choices in the base game. They could've offered different alternatives for completing quests if certain NPCs happened to be killed in some way instead of just making them totally unkillable. They could have made you need to jump through more hoops than usual if you were unable to get certain information from an NPC before they were killed, stuff like that.
And these things wouldn't take that much effort to be implemented either since, like you said, mods offer them in droves and those authors did them for absolutely free. Just imagine that for a moment: the players are more passionate about the game than the creators themselves.
>>318400067
There's mods to emulate morrowind for those inclined to the older game, Oblivion has a much bigger pool of mods and they are unquestionably better designed as the tools available to modders are much more advanced than morrowinds creation kit.
The core of Morrowind is a buggy mess, if you like breaking the game for the fun of it but claim immersion is important to you then I don't know what to say.
It's worse because of what I've already said, as a design choice some people will miss the notification that they fucked up and won't reload, the PR for the game will be terrible and reviews will reflect as such for any modern game doing what morrowind did. It'd be slandered by normies and as much as you might hate them, they pay for the gaming industry too and they are the unfortunate majority demographic for Bethesda games. Is it a bit baby hand holding? Sure it is, but is it a crucial failsafe to stop retards from reviewing poorly? Undoubtedly. And mods that give freedom are relevant if that is your only problem with the game.
Optional things are fine if they are natural and don't encourage scum bag practices like saving every 10 seconds so you don't have to deal with negative repercussions. There's a huge difference between them regardless of what I believe.
>>318397786
Yes but all those can be modded out unlike Skyrim all while having the best music, best quests, best expansions, and most memorable NPCs in the series.
>>318400478
You keep calling it lazy and I keep pointing out that it's a limitation to appeal to the vast majority. The vast majority simply wont notice those notifications and will proceed to fuck their game up. I'll repeat myself one more time because I feel like a scratched record, the crucial NPC design choice is not Bethesda being too lazy to give you a notification instead that you fucked up, that's rather easy in retrospect, it's done so that retard normies won't shit on the games review sites.
If you could think of a better way they could handle that aspect of the game, that's ten years old by the way, then please do share. I accept that they could have other NPCs fill the role of the origional quest giver, but what sense does it make if you killed him and they know you killed him, do you think they would be so easy to trust you after that? And at what point do they have to start reusing assets, they can't just randomize a character every time, not with Oblivions potato character creator, it needs to be tailored to retain what little quality it has, although for its time it was a pretty nice looking game in other areas. You;re forgetting that this game was ported to last gen systems and had ridiculous amounts of game areas, audio and so on cut from the game because of disk limitations. Go look at some youtube videos explaining how much cut content there was, it's huge. There was a voiced Arena in every city in the game with its own unique guild. Let that just sink in, the limitations were so huge that out of necessity they didn't cover every single basis and it still turned out to be one of the best games they've ever made.
Oblivion was so unintentionally goofy. And it was good because of it.
Look at this persuasion system. You won't see these kind of mechanics ever again.
>>318397786
>unpickable locks
NIGGA what is skeleton key and auto attempting every single lock there after....
RPG mechanics aside, unmodded TES combat wasn't fun or as reactionary until Skyrim. Even though it was easy.
>>318398252
Can you make me a sandwich?
>>318402767

>>318398202
i like it better because the crafting system wasnt as complicated. when i got to skyrim it was a fucking chore making all the weapons i wanted and there were so many options. it was a good balance. just like fallout 3, and just like mw2....customization/crafting but not so much it took away from the gameplay.
>>318402505
>Look at this persuasion system. You won't see these kind of mechanics ever again.
I'm sure there will be some other game that turns what should be a straightforward conversation menu into a shitty, tacked-on minigame.
>>318402786
we know that already anon...nobody talks about the combat being good when they talk about Oblivion
>>318397190
Oblivion had the best side quests of any Bethesda game. Sure it had a generic looking world, bland main quest, repetitive dungeons and potato faces but I can clearly remember a bunch of the side quests. It was also the last Bethesda game to have attributes and skills which leaves less room for imagination and creativity. I remember making a Nike outfit and I could sprint and jump into the lake surrounding the main city from so far away. Shit was awesome. The music was chill too.
>>318403267
In the age of realism and immersion? Doubt it.
>>318403123
It's already been explained that this limitation is in place to make sure the player is aware of the games narration, plot devices and story driven elements and is done out of necessity.

I think he's under the assumption people think lock picking was like it is in new Beth games. Fallout 4 requires you to have a specific lockpicking skill for harder locks, and I think Skyrim did too. It's been years since I played that piece of shit game so don't quote me. But Oblivion lets you attempt lock picking at all levels of mastery, and it is possible to lock pick a master lock while being a novice. I think that's what he meant anyway.
>>318403979
this is indeed what i meant.
i didnt really think to much of the doors that are there that couldnt be opened except with a specific key. in which case i either did the quest to get said key, or didnt give a fuck about it.
>yfw You just want an Elderscrolls game based in Oblivion, from the perspective of a daedra's thrall
>yfw You want to be so bad assed, you escape hell.
Oblivion was the last bethesda game with soul and charm. sure it had a bunch of problems but you can tell the dev team making it had some passion for gaming.
>>318404171
Normal people won't give a shit, some people on /v/ would argue that because they don't have infinite freedoms that the game is too restricting and hence shit. It's hard to get into the mind set of these people, they have such high expectations for games that never get met and I don't understand what they're doing browsing this board.
