I've met dozen of people who claim that it is the best wRPG of all time and at the same time they never made it out of the first dungeon.
Don't get me wrong the first half of the game is fine D&D adventuring but it lacks a good main story and roleplaying options like choice and consequence. It also falls apart after the first half/when leaving Athkatla.

Then you clearly dislike stealth because those were the only parts were you actually had to take the surrounding environment into question because doors would open/ close and the scientists would casually walk by. Also, due to the scientist costume, you needed to take into consideration when to pull out your weapons and when to keep yourself disguised. All other areas were huge and allowed you to just crawl inside a bush or shadow and wait for a retarded soldier to pass by so you could either CQC or tranquilize him. Also, I'd like to add that the Ocelot ambush at the beginning of the game actually gave me hopes that there would be more awesome parts like it. There weren't.

The camouflage play, the level design, the stealth, the survival mechanics, the incredible bosses (Superior to the ones in 1, yeah, I said it) and excellent and godtier story.

The Pain and The Fear could have been replaced by the chopper going lower when they needed to kidnap Sokolov. The Fury and The End don't even play into the plot. Sokolov and Granin could have been the same character. Same for The Fury and Volgin.

Metal Gear Solid 3 tells us Big Boss is a bad guy who used to be (from a very specific point of view) good. But that doesn't add anything to the plot that already had been worked out but Metal Gear 1 through Sons of Liberty because it's not even mentioned.
I'm surprised you've even managed to communicate something since apparently your only means for saying the game you like is great is by calling another one terrible. No, that's MG 1 and more importantly, 2. Naked Snake starts as a pretty alright guy that seems to be doing his best to avoid world war and a nuclear apocalypse. It's at the end of the game, in a brilliant twist, that it becomes clear why he turned into Big Boss years later, in the events of MG1.
MGS 2's plot is not convoluted, as in, the actual story itself. It's the way it's poorly shown and edited (and perhaps translated?) that results in it being a dumb mess. Kojima basically throws 20 different ideas he read in a newspaper at the wall in 30 to 1 hour monologues and sees if anything sticks. MGS 1 and 3 were much more focused in what they were actually talking about.
Call of Duty 4 is grossly overrated and always called "teh bestest calladoody evar!" when that title clearly goes to Call of Duty 2

MGS 3 was all that was ever needed to explain why Naked Snake turned into the villainous Big Boss in MG 1/2. Ignore Peace Walker. Ignore Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PRETEND MGS 4 NEVER HAPPENED.
His leader and hero, The Boss, taught him to be a soldier for the good of the nation, he learned how to fight and to serve from her, and then she seemingly betrays him and joins the Russians. Snake, wounded and looking for revenge, goes through hell and manages to kill her.
And that's when he learns the truth. The Boss served as the ultimate pawn to save the USA from it's own mistakes. She had to betray her comrades, had to harm her apprentice, had to get killed by his hand and had to sacrifice her honor and become despised by the entire world (although she ended up letting Snake in on the truth, not wanting to be despised by him)
The greatest soldier that ever lived, the woman he loved, instead of being celebrated as the hero she was, ends up being vilified as the greatest threat to the world.
Not only does Snake hate the government for basically assassinating her and her honor, but he realized that he had no guarantees he or any soldier he fought alongside with wouldn't end in the same position.
As he salutes her grave and a tear falls from his eye, the heroic sad music takes a turn into a menacing tune, his face twitches with anger and it cuts to black.
You can very easily deduce what happened from here and link this shit yourself. Ignore the retcons that turned him into a person that ran away, a fighter against Zero, all that retarded bullshit.
He kept working for the government with his anger growing, serving as Foxhound's leader until he finally found the chance to create an Outer Heaven for soldiers like him, who would never become tools of the government and suffer The Boss's fate.

It only has one idea, which is "think for yourself". It's trying to point out that following references is pointless because the world in its current state has inherently contradicting values. That's shown as soon as Raiden takes off the mask and you realize Snake is not coming back, and it can only really sink into your mind by the ending, when you realize you're kind of an asshole for killing Solidus. I sincerely suggest you read more into it. MGS2 is even more focused on its themes than 1 and 3. But hey, I think 3 is a great game too, just not on par with 2 in my opinion.
