I've been saying they should have gone with him living off some mold or something that grew in there with him. So for 200 years he has been eating that. Then when you let him out he could give you a quest to get him all the different foods of the wasteland. And in the end he decides to stick with the mold because he is used to it. And you can get some perk about food.

They can die and desire food and pleasure just like us, because they're just humans.
