Does anyone else think that pretty much every video game aliens are generic as fuck? It's either blue humans with weird heads, bug people with a swarm mentality, or shitty Giger ripoffs.
I'm tired of this shit. It's fucking Outer Space! You can think of literally anything and it'll work, and yet we just stick around with the same old tired shit. Why?
discovering a cool, original alien species was the best part of mass effect. They weren't all good, but the elcor were great at least.
Giger had the right idea. I say keep ripping him off.
Halo has good aliums with good lore
Destiny dropped the ball quite a bit but the fallen and vex are pretty neat I guess
I want to see more aliens like the ones in SC
>>318357348
Never really got into Halo, but they honestly just look like humans with dinosaur faces
>>318357730
That couldn't be more wrong
They do have 4 limbs yeah but there bodies and how the limbs are structured are totally different
Plus that's only one of the species.
Another interesting one is the Hunters which are a colony of worms who have been trained to live in battle armor and are born and deployed in pairs
>>318357348
Fallen took huge inspiration from covenant
Vex took huge inspiration from cylons
Hive took huge inspiration from the Locust from gears.
Cabal took huge inspiration from space marines
Ratchet and Clank has some pretty cool species.
>>318357395
fuck I saw a video about these guys posted here but I don't remember shit, they're like incredibly creepy world destroying things right?
Have you ever sat and tried to think of an original alien?
Shit is fucking hard without basing it off something else, because we've never seen something that is truly unbelievable.
Even giger based his off bugs and shit.
>>318359212
I think you mean dicks. Gigers stuff is super sexuality based.
>>318359453
Yeah and that is a part of what makes it unique scary looking.
>>318359212
I just want less humanoids to be honest
>>318359212
It is because you can't dude, everything is taken from somewhere if we could create something out of nothing you would be a magician/godlike being.
>>318359838
Thing is, only thing that hasn't really been done is giant sentient amoebas. Mass Effect had the best aliens and the worst aliens in videogames with best being Elcor and Hanarr.
Worst are pretty much all star trek/farscape aliens like Vorcha, Batarians, Asari, Krogan all terrible.
Would Mars People count as Giger ripoffs since they look like dicks?
>>318360893
They are literally mushroom aliens.
>>318356740
Come up with an idea for aliens then op, then ill tell you why its shit.
>>318358997
Couldn't be more wrong about the Hive. If anything the thrall did but that's about it.
>Destiny will never be anything like it's concept art because Jason Jones is a fucking kike
JUST END MY LIFE SENPAI
>>318361156
Nip interpretation of martians is jellyfish ayyliums, not really shrooms
Nothing less from the pioneers of tentacle porn
Videogame aliens are limited by two major things:
If the developer wants to make them relatable and sympathetic, the best way of doing so is making them human-like. That means shit like Blue-Skinned Women, Green Men, etc...
If they're making monsters they just make grotesque shit.
And the other thing holding back videogame aliens? Animation. It's MUCH easier to make a fucking bipedal human-like alien than it is to make a wide variety of aliens with unique forms of locomtion (all of it requiring a ton of animation work).
So making blue humans with weird heads is pretty much EZ Mode aliens, and the most cost effective way of populating a universe with them.
Endless Space has some really cool alien species

Fuck off lorefag, visually they are heavily influence by locust.
>Wizard/Kantus ink cloud
>Acolyte cloth, clothing in general
>Both Underground hubs
>Cleavers
Sure they differentieted the two with lore but visually and thematically the inspirations are definitely there.
You could interchange units between Hive and Locust and you wouldn't even bat an eye.
It's easier to make aliens like that because it's easier for them to navigate the levels you've made. It also makes it easier for the player to identify it's weak points and understand how it works so they can kill it easier.
So what you're telling me is that we need a good Animorphs game.
>>318361916
Not that other guy but I don't see what you're getting at here at all. The Locust are like some weird more grounded Warhammer race and the Hive kinda just look like weird space gollums.
>>318356740
I know xcom uses a lot of generic designs, but the mechanics and atmosphere surrounding the aliens makes them super cool.
I think it'd be cool to see aliens based off biblical angels
>>318362354
Even the architecture is similar between them. I am not saying they look exactly the same but they are close enough that one could merge with the other and they still would all fit together. Hive were heavily inspired by Locust but obviously not exactly the same.
>>318362828
Evangelion got that covered for you senpai
>>318363182
I know, I just want to see it in video games
>>318363289
Bayonetta kinda gets into that, without the alien aspect.
>>318363390
Well SMT and a number of thousand of japanese games take on biblical angels. Just with the alien theme only Eva took that theme on and can't really be replicated without it being called a copycat.
>>318362354
Some of those with the helmets definitely look like hive, the ones that don't are the ones with the faces which is the main distinguishing factor.
I actually kind of like the fallen. Yeah, they're not the most original, but their design is good for weird space pirates.
Vidya needs to take a look at literature for alium designs.
Where are the star dragons? Where are the alium personalities that live in radio signals? Where are the virtual humans living inside a super computer in the core of the Sun? Where are the higher dimension beings trapped in our universe that are abusing the laws of physics for their own personal gain?
Hell, a blatant rip off of the Martians from the Last & First Men would be interesting.
