I realize /v/ might not be the place for in-depth matchup discussion but I use Chipp and I'm having a lot of trouble against Zato-1. People tell me that that's a good matchup for Chipp, but they never explain why.
What can I do? I don't know how to deal with Zato's neutral, his drill projectile is really strong and difficult to deal with.

Not a chipp player so take this with a grain of salt, but generally that match up is going to have you in the air a lot. You should watch out for I think the move was called Nobiru which is eddies upper cut. You want to know where eddie is all the time in this match. You can also stick with shuriken and gamma blade to stop neutral approaches.

Chipp has always had generally favorable matchups against zoning characters. He can literally teleport past all their bullshit. You just have to be gud about not teleporting directly into their line of fire.

Just stand full screen away mashing teleport in place to gain meter, wait for Zato to do something, teleport YRC behind him. Chipp beats Zato.

Teleport YRC makes it difficult to position Eddie in neutral. Usually you can look for a puddle summon after a drill and if you can YRC teleport behind then eddie is in trouble. Keep in mind you have to FD block Nobiru in air. A lot of the match tends to play with Chipp jumping away looking for an opportunity to go in.
As the other guy posted Gamma blade and shuriken are useful for sniping lil eddie. You can also use well spaced alpha blade to hit lil eddie or try to catch Zato. This old Samitto vs Ogawa highlights the match well. https://youtu.be/dVVZrQmb-qY

I'm not very experienced in the game but I know two things about Chipp and Zato
Chipp has incredibly good rushdown
Zato has incredibly garbage defensive options
My guess is that because Chipp's teleports are so incredibly good it's not too hard to get in on Zato, and then he's capable of just overwhelming him with his rushdown.

Chipp has a favorable matchup against Zato in my opinion.
Gamma blade can ruin Eddie's day, making drill cover pointless.
Alpha blade and teleport YRCs are also extremely strong against him since it makes any drill unsafe.
The best option Zato has is to play defensive with a lot of hard hitting options such as fishing for a Nobiru counterhit off a teleport.
Locking Chipp down midscreen is very difficult, so you usually won't have to deal with too many of Zato's mixup options.
Once Chip gets a knockdown, especially in the corner, there is not much Zato can do aside from guess right.
Even Ogawa occasionally gets bullied by good Chipp players.
