The gameplay looks like it hasn't decided what it wants to be, and thus looks like a janky aborted fetus of a game.

The character design is some of the worst I've ever seen.

The MP is great fun, SP is just a linear run& gun deal.
The gameplay mechanics make a lot more sense in online play whereas in the SP mode it feels like it was designed after the MP mode

Probably never. There is far too much shit needed to get it working. Even then, there's no point. The consoles are cheap and even cheaper to hack. The library is nothing exceptional, half the good games were ported to pc or remastered. It's like trying to emulate a pc, it's not like emulating an nes or even a really old pc. It's too complicated.

The game was made with a very small team with a very small budget. It's basically an indie game that Nintendo picked up.
As such, it has a number of weird technical problems and rather unimpressive visuals. The mechanics themselves, however, are fantastic. Really, the hate towards the game is clearly overblown.
As you said, TBBF are clearly having fun with it, and it's honestly made me want the game more. It's really not a coincidence that videos that shit on the game just show little clips of weird moments, and not entire runs through the level.
