Samsung made it in partnership with Oculus. Nobody else really even knew how to compete or was paying enough attention. Maybe HTC and Valve coupdve competed with their own mobile VR but that's really about it.
Oculus was the only company with the infrastructure to just jump into mobile VR with a partner like this.
