I don't really get it either.
I mean.. I love the game. It ate up a great deal of time when I played it as a kid/teen, and the first thing I did when I got a PC as an adult was install Steam and buy AoE II HD. Just kinda seems to be a point of agreement on /v/ that it was a good game and everyone enjoyed it.

AoE2 is overrated as fuck, but it's a fantastic introduction to the gameplay of the RTS genre, while having enough nuances to individualize it as a unique and remarkable addition to the market.
PC gamers passing on it because "it's old," "it's too popular," or "it's overrated," are doing themselves a disservice. AoE2 is great fun alone or with friends. Especially with friends.

I'm shocked you want to know. My opinion matters little, but because you asked:
I wouldn't change a thing about AoE2. The flaws, the successes, and the quirks of the game are now set in time, and because of that, it has attracted a group of gamers who play AoE BECAUSE of these qualities. Changing the game would make AoE2 or it's hypothetical successers a different game, one that probably exists already (see 3rd paragraph)
It's overrated, but not because it's bad (far from it). It's overrated because there are more strategic RTSs that offer more options for the player over time. Other games is the same genre offer more to the players than AoE2, I feel.
The game flow, and progression of gameplay for the players in AoE2 is very good. In saying this, however, I found AoE2 lacking deeper systems and gameplay. When compared to Rise of Nations, Empire Earth, or Total War, AoE2 is without a doubt an easier game to learn and master.

If you only have the base game, you are allowed to joined any lobby, but if the host has DLC, you can only picked from a pool of 6 random civilizations, including DLC ones. The pool changes every week

Micro your units (preferably fast hard hitting ones) to attack each monk. Or use siege, like catapults or trebuchets that can attack from a bit of a distance. Goal is to kill them quickly. Monks cost alot of gold, if your enemy has a monk army you might already be too far behind to win

The base Gane HD edition already comes with the expansions. The other ones are bew expansions released after like 10 years of the main game, I would stick to the original ones.

Yes, but remember Steam has decided from this sale onwards, there will be no more Flash Sales, no more Extra low sales, so chances are the prices will remain the same in future sales.
Most likely a result of the refund system and how they probaably dont want to be further bothered by hordes of people refunding games because of a flash sale or a new lower daily sale.
