Why do people regard this as the best in the franchise? I mean it was a good game, but as an MGS game it didn't really sit well with me. MGS3 just felt so much better in comparison.

Terranigmafags will wonder why the fuck aren't you talking about Illusion of Gaia, but I find both of them good, but Terranigma edges out Soul Blazes due to that overworld track.

I like Soul Blazer because it's simpler and it's addicting as fuck. Getting new shit while unravelling each part of the world is so much fun.

Me too. Were you annoyed with the controls of SotC? I know they're supposed to be heavy and slow but I just felt like I wasn't properly in control, it's such a shitty feeling. Specially the way the horse controlled. A lot of the bosses became really tedious because even after figuring out how to beat them, I could still screw up at some point and have to start over, and then it takes like 5 minutes to get back to where I was and I may even have to repeat the same thing 2-3 times depending on the boss (some of them forcefully shake you off at points and aren't even supposed to be beaten in one go unless you're a madpro speedrunner). When it gets like that it stops being an epic and emotional battle and turns more into a frustrating drag.

Conceptually and thematically, I loved it, the OST and art direction were great too, but the gameplay was incredibly tedious and just not very fun for the most part. Oh, and fuck that shitty framerate. As if things weren't going slow enough already.

Gameplay wise Ico may have just been a simple (though well thought out) platformer with a special twist to it but, but I'd rather have something simple and solid than something complex and wonky. In any case I admire what they tried to do with SotC but the end result just wasn't good enough.
